The New York Red Bulls continue their pre-season in Aironza tonight, when they take on reigning Mexican champions UNAM Pumas at Chase Field in Phoenix (10pm, MSG+, ESPN Deportes).

The Red Bulls welcome back Thierry Henry from his loan spell at Arsenal, and will be fielding a strong squad against a Mexican team that should provide their toughest test of the pre-season.

  1. Not sure if its a good idea to have Lindpere and Cooper on the same side. Both players are slow. I would like Red Bulls to move Lindpere to the middle and use the DP to get a real winger on the left.

For those critical of Red Bull performance against Pumas, here’s a question. When do MLS teams ever have more possession than a Mexican team?

  2. I know. LA has dropped every single pre-season match. I worry for their fans.

We had our reserves lose to Real who put on a bunch of starters second half.

I think a better barometer will be the next match against Revolution on Sat. Then we’ll see what kind of team Hans puts out and how we fair against them.

  3. man yall are trippin…. RBNY had a crap load of chances to score, same for Pumas but Meara played out of his mind! great game for RBNY and MLS…. we can play with the best Mexico has to offer!

  4. While Cooper didn’t do great in Portland, they asked him to play as a #9 type striker and that isn’t his style of play. Even given that he still managed to be the teams top goal scorer last year. At the end of 2010 the fans in D.C. were saying Perkins was done. Look what he did for Portland last year.

  5. NYRB tended to over complicate things while passing out of the back thinking they are Real Madrid or Barcelona. Is it necessary to try to make 3 – 5 passes moving it out of your end of the field? Usually the 3rd – 5th pass went to Pumas or the guy got dispossessed. Look how simple Pumas passed out of the back, no more than 2 touches out of the back.

I give credit to them being much tighter at the back with 8-9 guys behind the ball defending and all defenders were within 5-7 yards of each other. However the fancy passing should be done on the attacking end instead of the defensive end.

  6. The Red Bulls looking like they will continue to struggle this season. I know this is only pre-season, but first kick is only a little over two weeks away. At least their rookie keeper looks good, although he hasn’t had to make any difficult saves. He looks comfortable though. The Red Bulls just can’t connect more than 5 passes before losing the ball. They have barely threatened the PUMAS goalie. I would be worried if I was a NY fan.

  7. Where is the Colorado Rapids – Yokohama FC game on ESPN3? I thought it was scheduled to be shown at 11pm EST?

NYRB looking too sloppy passing out of the back.

  8. Question…has there been any discussion of MLS Direct Kick being available via PS3, Xbox, etc? It really is much better than watching on laptop (or alternatively being forced to plug in laptop to tv)
