The New England Revolution thought that they had secured a prized piece to their attacking puzzle by announcing the signing of Colombian forward Jose "Pepe" Moreno on loan from Once Caldas last week. While that still may wind up being the case, there's something a bit awkward and unusual going on.
According to reports out of Colombia, Moreno himself said that he is staying at Once Caldas and turning down the Revs' offer. The Revolution commented on the situation Tuesday night and appeared confident that all the correct channels had been taken to sign Moreno and that the deal was completed.
"We're looking into the report out of Colombia, but Jose signed all of his paperwork, including his contract, last week," the team posted on its official Twitter account Tuesday night.
The club announced his signing last Thursday, figuring that it was adding the 30-year-old No. 9 to an unheralded attacking corps that currently is comprised of new signing Fernando Cardenas, Zack Schilawski, Diego Fagundez, Kenny Mansally and Ryan Kinne.
What do you make of this situation? If Moreno does not join the club, how much trouble do you think that poses for the Revs?
