A big snowstorm hit England on Saturday, threatening to jeopardize the slate of matches set for today, but the big headliner between Chelsea and Manchester United will go on as planned, and it will serve as the marquee match of a busy day in the soccer world.

While the Super Bowl dominates the American sports landscape today, soccer fans here will have plenty to choose from for their viewing pleasures, topped off with the big Chelsea-United clash. The Blues are at home and need a win to solidify their place in the English Premier League's top four, while Manchester United must win to keep pace with Manchester City for first place.

if you think Chelsea-Man United is the day's only big match, think again. There are quality showdowns all over the globe. In Italy, Juventus will look to stay unbeaten with a win against Siena, while AC Milan faces a much tougher task, needing to beat a tough Napoli side to try and close the gap on Juve.

In Spain, Atletico Madrid and Sevilla square off, while Brazil brings us a juicy clash between Neymar-led Santos against Palmeiras.

In Mexico, DaMarcus Beasley and Puebla go up against Edgar Castillo, Joey Corona, Greg Garza and Club Tijuana in the day's match featuring the most Americans.

  1. Anyone here can explain why there are no covered stadium in england and northern europe?

We have covered stadiums everywhere here since before I was born and with retractable roofs you can have real grass.

How does Russia have a winter league now and no covered stadiums? Sure they can take half the year off but even when it comes back after a looong break, its effing cold.

  2. Anti Americanism, now that’s always the answer right?

Clint has played almost the exact same number of league games for Fulham every year except for his first year and the year he got hurt.

Dembele may need more kind words than Dempsey a notorious hard case. Clint seems more productive with a big chip on his shoulder. Maybe the Fulham managers have figured this out?

Jol is unpleasant but we have no idea what he and Dempsey say to each other behind closed doors do we? Finally, whatever terrible managment strategy the Fulham Fab Five have used on Duece over the years it has been very productive so I ask you why fix it if it ain’t broke?

  3. Barring injury to someone else, if JK were going to call in Scaha don’t you think he would have done it by now?

Clark’s callup was more of a fact finding mission.

What Sacha has to offer has been plain as day and out there for a while now.

  4. “He needs the ball at his feet or on his noggin for a shot on goal.”

That is more likely to happen for him if he plays more withdrawn as opposed to right up top.

  5. Ives,

The “calls balance out” defense is an anodyne for the pain of reasoning. Yes, statistically calls tend to go for and against you over time, but that doesn’t negate the fact that bad calls are made, and that referees should be held accountable for their bad calls. The second penalty awarded by Webb was a bad call. Moreover, he has a history of making such bad calls that do change the game. While there are bigger problems in the world than the refereeing of a soccer game, there should be repercussions for blowing calls. Instead, Howard Webb is unduly considered a great ref who got to ref the World Cup final (he also sucked there).

  6. Ummm…you are wrong, as you are throughout this thread. The referee keeps time. Just because he doesn’t hold up the board doesn’t mean he isn’t keeping time. Check the FIFA Laws of the Game.

  7. I am not Italian, but those are the reasons I am not happy with Milan. Plus the addition of van Bommel and flirtation with team cancer Tevez.

  8. Oh My God!!!! Just looked at the page you mentioned and a hint there that Schalke has tried a couple of times to snag Dempsey. I had never heard that one before. I would love to see Clint in the Bundesliga and Schalke, with new coach and Jermaine Jones mentor Hubb Stevens, would be perfect for a hard-nosed fighter like Dempsey, who is stuck playing for Jol who has fizzled just about everywhere he has coached. Schalke is an excellent team that plays in a nice stadium with a huge fanbase and with a good shot at playing in the Champions League again next year. It would be hard for Dempsey to do better than Schalke. Plus he can make a big, big salary to support his young family (Jones is reportedly pulling down 4m euros a year at Schalke). Dempsey needs to put major pressure on Fulham to let him go this summer.

As for Kljestan, do not see how Klinsmann could ignore him for the Italy friendly, especially after calling up Ricardo Clark in January.

  9. Great comeback from United. They always seem to be the fittest side at the end. I also predicted at another site, they’d take title from City with a +3 PK advantage. They work PKs as well as any side. For example Wellbeck loses ball than drags his feet across defenders outstretched leg. It would be tough call for any referee to make.

  10. I don’t think Romeu could play for a top MLS side. He has average skills and is very slow.
With their giant pay-roll they can do better than him.
