Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Bolton Wanderers climbed out of the relegation zone this weekend, and it can partially thank Tim Ream for that.

Playing in his fourth game for Bolton since joining the club in January, Ream helped the club beat Queens Park Rangers in a game with relegation implications for both sides. Ream set up the game's opening goal when he delivered a cross from the left flank that was headed into the back of the net. The assist was Ream's first with Bolton.

Another player who got an assist this weekend is Herculez Gomez. The man that truly defines scoring in bunches set up a goal and scored two as Santos Laguna defeated Puebla, 3-1. Gomez, whose first finish was a splendid volley from the right side of the penalty area, has now scored five goals in his last four games across all competitions. DaMarcus Beasley scored Puebla's lone goal following a mistake by one of American fans' favorite villain, Osvaldo Sanchez.

It was not all good news this weekend. Fabian Johnson picked up a thigh injury during TSG 1899 Hoffenheim's pregame warmups and was scratched from the starting lineup against Bayern Munich. With Joe Gyau not on the gameday roster, Danny Williams was the lone American to participate in that game, though he might wish he wasn't. Hoffenheim lost in embarassing fashion, falling 7-1.

Here is how the Americans Abroad performed this weekend:

What do you think of these performances? Impressed with Ream's assist? Is Gomez worth giving another shot on the U.S. men's national team? Surprised Williams and Hoffenheim lost by such a big margin?

  1. I love how in this country when you just mention someones skin tone which obvious and for all to see… (it is indeed a fact that all of those above players are born to African-American fathers)…. that something can be construed as racist…mentioning someones skin tone is in no way racist…

I also don’t think African American serviceman are any more oversexed/crazy than any other unmarried US serviceman who is away from home and wanting to get laid… men like sex… it ain’t some secret…

  2. He is from Hotlanta…

    On a serious note:

    1) stereotypical =/= racist (“RAYCESS”)

    2) German, spoken by a female with the right accent can be quite sexy

  3. I know that you said that in an attempt to be funny, but considering the history of this country and the stereotype that African-Americans are oversexed and crazed, I would have figured you would have had the common sense to avoid saying something that is obviously racist.

  4. More stupid americans who dont get it.

If bolton stays up tim ream will start for bolton next year at CB. He has performed very well and has taken an english international (ok only 2 caps) zat knight and put him on the bench.

He has been one of the highest rated players for bolton in the past month and has performed well. (only klasnic has probably performed better)

yet still Americans are too dumb to see he is easily the most promising CB prospect we have. His passing distribution and defending have gotten better and will become better with more years in england.

In 2014 he will replace bocanegra. no doubt about that.

I am hopeful he and geoff cameron can be our starting cb duo in 2014.

    Howard

    Lichaj Cameron Ream Chandler

    Jones

    Donovan Fabian J.

    Bradley

    Dempsey

    Altidore

    Best 11 in 2014 I hope.

Bench shea, agudelo/boyd (depending on who developes quicker), edu, cherundelo, whitbread, guzan

  5. Ream may actually be PL quality which is great news. Hope Gonzalez is healthy by year’s end and John gets to head to Europe. We need our boys ready for Brazi

  6. While I agree that he is not currently a USMNT caliber center back, let’s give him a little time to develop. He is calm on the ball and a good distributor. If he can improve his set piece marking and overall physicality, he could be a very good center back.

  7. In fairness… I seem to recall him getting a slight injury before international break and being left off for that reason… someone correct me if I am wrong…

  8. Apparently you are new here. At the over-the-hill age of 22, Jozy Altidore is done. He is too lazy to reach a high level and has never, ever proven anything to anybody. Goal against Guadeloupe? Meteor strike. Against Spain in the Confederations Cup? Puyol got hair stuck in his eye and Casillas pushed the ball in the goal. All those Eredivisie goals? My grandma would look like Messi in that Sunday Rec league.

  9. ZING!!

As stated above…He is not the off-spring of a red blooded, horny African American serviceman and a sexy German broad looking to make love and perhaps a USMNT footballer of the future…

Danny Williams, Jermaine Jones, Timothy Chandler, David Yelldell, Fabian Johnson, Terrence Boyd….

    That is a quite a phenomenon…

  10. Or we could let him develop in the premier league for a bit, and call him in progressively more as his skills as a defender improve from playing against teams in one of the world’s top leagues.
    Kind of like Jozy.

  11. I have been very critical of Ream and I am glad he got an assist. I do not believe he should be in our defense for the nats. He should come off the bench as a Midfield in a CM or CDM position for the nats if anything. I think that he is a true midfielder. I have no idea if it was his idea, or a coaches idea to put him as CB. He should be converted permanently into a midfielder.

  12. 2. All four goals.

    3. Danny Williams played 90 minutes.

    5. Brad Friedel has quite a reputation abroad. I imagine if you perceive otherwise, it’s due partially to the fact that he’s not involved with the national team anymore.

  13. I think it actually would be nice if Ives/other people could aggregate ‘relevant Americans in the near-future for the USMNT who play in MLS’ highlights/stat lines. Has a nice ring to it, eh?

But seriously, how Brek Shea, etc. did would be interesting as well.

  14. Yeah he totally did forget! He was an 85th minute sub for FC Dallas against NYRB today.

Oh wait…this is Americans Abroad isn’t it?

  15. 1. Herculez Gomez is one of the easiest Yanks abroad to root for… up there with Holden, or Davies pre-diving and pre-lawsuit. Actually most of our guys are rather unoffensive, it certainly beats having a team full of Terrys and Rios and Coles.

    2. It’s incredible that two Americans were involved in all three goals in a Mexican league game.

    3. I’m glad none of the three Americans were involved in Hoffenheim’s 7-1 humiliation.

    4. I can’t believe Kaiseralautern, who have an almost impossible time scoring goals, didn’t at least bring in Andrew Wooten off the bench, considering he almost scored a great goal in his debut. 0-0 draw serves them right.

    5. I’m glad Howard bested Friedel, but Brad Friedel is probably the most unheralded American abroad. He’s got to be one of the top 3-4 goalkeepers in the Premier League this year, and no one talks about it. Maybe it’s just expected at this point, or maybe it’s because he’s retired from the national team?
