Vancouver Whitecaps rookie forward Darren Mattocks has been sidelined indefinitely after suffering burns while cooking dinner this past weekend.

According to a Whitecaps press release, Mattocks was preparing dinner on Sunday when he suffered burns to his upper right arm and shoulder. The 21-year-old Jamaican was admitted to a local hospital and he is currently being treated and assessed.

"It was an unfortunate accident, but Darren is handling everything well and remains in good spirits," Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie said in the press release. "We will have a better understanding on the recovery time and course of action later in the week, but we fully anticipate Darren to make a complete recovery in due time."

Chosen second overall in the 2012 MLS Draft, Mattocks had made one appearance this MLS campaign, coming off the bench for a late cameo in Vancouver's season-opening win over the Montreal Impact.

  1. my guess? loose shirt that caught fire. it’s far enough away from your stomach and chest to only burn where it touches. A friend of mine had this happen, third degree burns on her neck and chest, nothing below her sternum.

  2. I loves this thread…

John Smoltz and Gramatica for sure … and maybe Gus Frerotte when he slammed his head into the wall after scoring a TD… neck stinger put him out for some time…

  3. We need to pay these rookies more so they can afford to eat out or hire a maid and cook; then these things won’t happen. Raise the cap!!

  4. Or comparisons to Al Green. Here’s just hoping he makes a quick recovery and doesn’t abandon his entertainment career for a life in the ministry.

  5. Highly doubt it’s a coverup. There would be no need for a “story”. A simple statement of an “undisclosed injury” would be suffice. You see this statement in all sports. Sometimes people go sniffing around; sometimes they don’t.

  6. Seriously, I hope he recovers fast.
Non seriously, it would be fun to have our own Balotelli in MLS. “Where should I set off these fireworks…?”

  7. Not even the strangest burn injury: Jon Smoltz went on the DL after he burned himself while ironing a shirt… that he was wearing at the time.

  8. Same here and I’ve been trying to figure out how he did this as well. Maybe he has an in-cabinet microwave and while he was taking something out of that, it spilled on him?

  9. From my (limited) inside experience injury stories like this one are usually coverups because the actual reason for the injury would cause bad pr if it was revealed.

  10. Upper arm and shoulder? I have had loads of kitchen mishaps with cuts, burns, spills, etc….but I am not quite sure how to burn a shoulder and upper arm only.

Do you reach WAY in the back of an oven and fall to the side? Flip the wok to high and have the food land on the shoulder? Make some fried food and have a big bumble splash up 3 feet and burst right on the shoulder?

Anyway…congrats on the oddest kitchen burn…..at least he didnt play for Chicago at the time.

  11. A burn serious enough to send you to the hospital for an extended stay is a damned nightmare. Hopefully he doesn’t have any long-term problems, but the treatment for a serious burn is really awful for weeks or months afterwards.

  12. On a serious note, and I understand that accidents simply happen sometimes, but it’s accidents like these that remind you how young a lot of these guys are. No disrespect intended, because I know that I wasn’t very handy in the kitchen, with an ironing board, etc when I was 21 either.

This is why a lot of these young athletes (like Kevin Durant) have their moms move in with them early on in their careers. Learn the life skills that they didn’t while they were out practicing their craft.

  14. My vote would go to Steve Morrow who scored the winning Goal for Arsenal in a League Cup final and then was dropped after almost immediately after the game by his captain Tony Adams. He broke his arm badly, left Wembley in an ambulance under oxygen and didn’t get to even pick up his medal.

Robbie Keane also ruptured knee ligaments bending over to pickup a remote control back in the days ….

Arrested Development jokes aside, I hope the guy makes a quick comeback…
