The second week of the MLS season kicks off this afternoon in Montreal, where the Impact will be making their home debut at Olympic Stadium against the Chicago Fire.
The most high-profile match of the day takes place in Utah, where Real Salt Lake will look to build on their impressive opening-week win by beating the New York Red Bulls at Rio Tinto Stadium. Arguably the best match of the day features FC Dallas taking on the Portland Timbers in a battle of teams who posted impressive week one victories.

I’m not talking about the highlights any more. I watched that portion of the match replay on MLS Live several times. Still don’t think it was a clear goalscoring opportunity or a foul worthy of a red. A foul, yes. A yellow, I wouldn’t argue.
But a red in the 14th minute for some tangled arms and scrappy defense on a player who didn’t have control of the ball (let alone didn’t make contact with the ball that was headed to him)… nah.
You can’t see what happened from the video. I was also sitting on the side of the field, and Sapong did control the ball. That’s when he was completely wrapped up and prevented from a second touch.
On the MLS site, the close-up doesn’t start until after that initial hold. Rather than going straight down, Sapong continued to fight, the close-up replay starts at this point, with the two of them holding each other.

Just watched the full video and I’ve got to agree with the commentators. Shouldn’t have been a red. Sapong didn’t have control of the ball–in fact, he didn’t even touch it–so it wasn’t a clear scoring opportunity.
Should have been a foul and maybe a yellow. Red was unjust, and SKC would still have pulled out the W.
I hope this new refereeing initiative that was announced the other week goes into effect sooner than later.
Try goal of the year! Estrada had a great match, but he’s going to have to keep it up to really make an impact.
Johnson’s goal was amazing. That was a left foot curler from outside of the box kissing off the post of the far-post upper-V. That was an amazing goal!
