Boston-based European club owners will have their teams go head-to-head at one of the United States' most storied stadiums this summer.
After plenty of rumors and speculation, Liverpool officially announced that they will play AS Roma in a summer friendly at Fenway Park this July. The exhibition will be a rematch of the 1984 European Cup final, which was won by Liverpool in penalties. Current Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish and former New England Revolution coach Steve Nicol suited up for the Reds that day.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool is slated to play "at least one other competitive match" during its North American tour. That match, however, will not be the MLS All-Star Game, as the clash with Roma takes place on July 25, the same day as the MLS mid-summer exhibition.
The meeting of the two clubs in Boston seemed inevitable, as Liverpool, owned by Fenway Sports Group founder John Henry and chairman Tom Werner, and Roma, owned by Thomas DiBenedetto are both linked with their ownership ties to Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox.
