It isn't often you have three goals scored in one match by American players in a foreign league (well, unless Clint Dempsey is doing it), but that's what happened in Mexico on Saturday night as Herculez Gomez scored two goals and DaMarcus Beasley added another in Santos Laguna's 3-1 win over Puebla.

Gomez's first goal, a golazo, helped Santos start a three-goal rally that moved them into first place in the Mexican First Division. The two goals give Gomez five goals in his past four matches in all competitions.

Here are the highlights:

  1. Beasley still can feature on the NT but only as depth. He’s 30 this year and has lost some speed but would be great for the younger guys to train and pick up things from home.

Gomez will be 32 by the next WC. Most likely he won’t be there. All we know is Jozy will be there and maybe Body, Agudelo, Bunbury or some other guys. But Gomez can play a big role in qualifying as well as Buddle.

    Give him a chance JK

  2. The US national team needs starters, and it needs role players. One of those roles is late game substitute forward when we need a goal. I can’t think of anyone who is better suited for that role in the entire US pool than Herculez Gomez.
This is 10x more of an “are you even watching?” situation than Sacha Kljestan.

  3. The guy can score goals. I know some people on here believe he’s streaky, but considering the amount of games in the short Mexican seasons (apertura and clausura)and the transfers he’s completed — 26 goals isn’t bad. Compare that with the amount of minutes he plays and the amount of goals all of the forwards that have been called up, and all of a sudden he doesn’t look so streaky.

  4. Peralta now has 5 goals in 2 games while Gomez has 5 in 4 games, and Santos is unbeaten in all home games thus far. Seattle doesn’t know what’s going to hit the wednesday

  5. When Gomez changes teams, and that is what playing for the US would be like, it takes him a while to get hot.

Better to call him up after qualifying starts the better to take advantage should he get hot. Herc is very streaky.

  6. Cue the Gomez USMNT call-up posts! I’ll get it started: How can you not call in Gomez?!? At least look at him and how he fits into new system, right? He’d make a great super sub IMO.
