Building from the ground up in MLS is no easy task, but if anyone knows something about a successful expansion season, it's Montreal Impact head coach Jesse Marsch.

A member of the D.C. United club that won the first MLS Cup and a member of the Chicago Fire club that won MLS Cup in its expansion season, Marsch embarks on his first head coaching gig with the Impact, who made the leap from NASL to MLS and have created quite a buzz north of the border.

Granted, the circumstances around being an expansion club in the 1996 and 1998 versions of MLS and one in 2012 are entirely different, but Montreal has made some notable moves to get started on the right foot. A series of savvy signings, draft picks and trades make the Impact an intriguing expansion team, though definitely not one without major questions and challenges entering its inaugural MLS season.

"What was real important with each (expansion team) was that there wasn't an attempt to take shortcuts and try and manipulate the roster or do all these creative ideas to try and get better," Marsch said. "It was more about having a group of guys that every day tried to learn a lesson or two or three each day and each game and the common understanding of what a team was all about. By the end of the year, you felt like you were a part of something different and something special. That's the message here."

Here is a closer look at the Impact ahead of the 2012 MLS season:

A good chunk of the preseason was consumed with the Brian Ching saga, after the club elected to pick the veteran forward from the Houston Dynamo in the expansion draft despite his threats to retire if selected. A long back-and-forth with the Dynamo ended in a trade that yielded a single conditional draft pick, a deal that made plenty wonder if using the pick on Ching was worth it in the end.

"It took a lot of twists and turns for sure," Marsch said. "Within the process we tried to be respectful of Brian, and I will say that in the end he was very respectful of us. He really helped serve a purpose in terms of setting a tone for what training is supposed to look like every day."

Instead of keeping Ching and holding onto Eddie Johnson after using their place in the allocation order on him before shipping the one-time U.S. striker to Seattle for Fucito and Lamar Neagle, the Impact are left with some questions up top. One of the known forward commodities the team has is Braun, who was a former teammate of Marsch with Chivas USA and was acquired in an expansion draft-day trade from the Goats for James Riley. Despite Ching's time with the club being brief, the veteran was able to rub off on Braun a bit, something that the 24-year-old forward can benefit from in his fifth year in the league.

"I thought Brian was very professional," Braun said. "When he was here, he was committed. I got to know him on a personal level, and he's a very good guy. The more he got to know the guys, he was more torn to leave. Obviously we would've loved to have him here, and I would've loved to get the chance to play alongside someone with such an established career. We talked a lot after training, he would give me lots of advice and in a short time I grew as a player."

Braun showed glimpses of greatness at Chivas USA, scoring nine and eight goals in each of the last two seasons, respectively. He'll have a clean slate with the Impact, where he'll look to achieve the level of consistency and production that had him on the fringes of the U.S. national team radar not too long ago.

"Obviously I would like to get that double-digit mark," Braun said. "It's been a goal of mine each season, and it's been disappointing to come so close. Hopefully I can score a couple early and take the pressure off me and go from there."

Another option up top could wind up being No. 1 overall MLS SuperDraft pick Andrew Wenger, who projected to be a centerback or midfielder at the pro level but has been used as an attacker during the preseason. He will join the club for good at the beginning of May after he completes his studies at Duke University.

"I watched him very carefully and watched a lot of games that he played, and I saw unique attacking qualities and unique intelligence in and around the goal that doesn't come to a lot of players," Marsch said. 

The Impact are more established elsewhere on the field. The club caught a break with Chivas leaving U.S. Under-23 defender Zarek Valentin unprotected in the expansion draft, giving the club a budding talent to build around in the back for years to come. The only downside to having Valentin is that he'll likely be missing time for U.S. Olympic qualifying and this summer's Olympics in London, should the U.S. U-23s make it there.

While with Montreal, he'll play in front of veteran Jamaican backstop Donovan Ricketts, whom the club acquired from the Los Angeles Galaxy for allocation money. Another player tasked with shielding Ricketts is Colombian and former Inter Milan centerback Nelson Rivas, who has missed nearly all of the preseason with a thigh injury. Marsch said that he is on schedule with his return and will hopefully be ready to contribute on the field in about a month.

The midfield, meanwhile, is stocked with MLS veterans, with Davy Arnaud, Justin Mapp and Sanna Nyassi vying for playing time along with Quebec native Patrice Bernier and Brazilian Felipe Martins.

While the roster building for Montreal has been an extensive exercise ("It has been a lengthy and laborious process for sure," Marsch said) it is still not complete. The club just agreed to terms with 32-year-old Italian centerback Matteo Ferrari on Thursday. Montreal also has 35-year-old Italian forward Bernardo Corradi on trial and has been open about its desire to sign a Designated Player.

The club made a play for Nicolas Anelka, approached the representatives for Alessandro Del Piero and Marsch confirmed that contact has been made with Michael Ballack. While adding a DP prior to the April 15 transfer deadline is still a possibility, it is looking more likely that the club will make a splash during the summer transfer window.

"There's been plenty of work done behind the scenes," Marsch said. "I think we're close in a lot of different situations, and we just have to figure out some of the finalities and what's the best fit."

Finding the right fit will be a season-long process for the Impact, which will look to become the first expansion side since the Seatle Sounders in 2009 — and the second one since Marsch's 1998 Fire — to make the postseason. 

"The more you play with a group, the more you're going to jell," Braun said. "We have a good group here, a lot of MLS veterans, and that's going to help us in the long run. We just need to continue learning and growing as a unit. It's a process. It's going to get better as the season goes on."
