Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

The race at the top of the English Premier League table is getting tougher by the week, and that tightening competition will make today's showdown between Tottenham and Manchester United all the more important.

Arsenal's recent run of form suddenly has the Gunners just four points behind Tottenham for third place in the Premier League, meaning Spurs don't have much room for error. They'll look to hold serve at home against a Manchester United side looking to close the gap on Manchester City for first place to two points with a road win.

Sunday's action also features some intense derbies, as Roma and Lazio collide in the Rome Derby, while Newcastle and Sunderland clash in the Tyne-Wear Derby.

If you are hoping to see some Americans in action, look no further than the Bundesliga, where TSG Hoffenheim is in action. Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams started in the U.S. national team's win against Italy, and should play roles for Hoffenheim against Cologne.

  1. Just finished fulham and switched over the Nurnberg only to see Chandler being subbed off as the Eurosport commentator said “not really surprised by this, he hasn’t had the best of games, the young american”

  2. Fulham beat the living piss out of Wolves today.

Pogrebnyak is so much more a threat than Zamora. QPR thought they had struck gold.

  3. Deuce with his 11th and 12 goal in the PL. 18 goals in all competitions with 11 games left. Dude could seriously score 20 league goals if he keeps the STEAM up.

  4. yeah, it’s not the piece of slow-moving, tactical performance are that is Serie A but damn there’s a lot going on out there.

And NOW there’s a 2nd yellow vs. Lazio player and a fun 6 minutes to ensue.

  5. You know, what’s great about this match is the number of turnovers on both sides leading to a more open and frenzied play. I’m sure Serie A tactical gods are weeping at the clumziness of both sides but MUCH more entertaining.

  6. Sometimes I think people forget how exciting La Liga can be, outside the 2 clasico teams. All the same skill with less diving and fewer divas. Athletic Bilbao vs Real Sociedad is turning into a really exciting game. On that note, I’m expecting someone in the PL to try and get Llorente this summer, the dude is a beast.

  7. I have to admit, this Rome derby is pretty exciting. Normally, as previously discussed, I find Serie A a snoozer but this match is a corker right now.

  8. I’d welcome him at Villa, but his track record in Portugal does fit our current M.O. of overwhelming underachievement and baffling and disappointing administrative choices.

  9. You have to feel for Terry Connor. He inherited a deflated squad that lacks cohesion. Fulham are playing well but Wolves are just plain awful.

  10. Thanks!

Actually, I can see him there as well. As long as ‘Dolo is healthy and can still play RB, the USMNT needs to work Chandler in somewhere given his ability and RW would seem to be the place.

  11. Just pulled up a stream of their game. He’s playing rw for now.

For the usmnt he could slot directly into the role d williams played against italy and be far more dangerous in attack.

  12. Make that two for the new signing on a poor give away and a quick counter by Johnson to the P man. 2-0 Fulham in the 44th

  13. I have to claim ignorance about where he is usually playing (although right side seems likely) but back in January, I did see him log about the last 10 minutes on the LW.

Between him, Danny Williams, and Fabian Johnson we have some versatile types, eh?

  14. Fulham finally scores – after all those chances. It’s their new russian probneyaik. Now maybe the flood gates will open and Dempsey will get his.

  15. Mike Dean throws out cautions and penalties like hotcakes. The first half of Newcastle-Sunderland was a complete joke.

  16. Fulham with a chance to jump to 8th with a win today. Playing excellent football lately. Pogrebnyak looks a great signing for Jol.

  17. Left wing or right? I haven’t seen any nuremberg matches, but yahoo’s uk site has listed him as a right winger.

  18. Fulham with 60% of possession, and looking the more dangerous of the sides. Wolves have had a couple of counter opportunities. Dempsey has had a couple of careless moments, but still playing dangerously

  19. He’s been listed as MF for the past 4 or 5 games including today in the Gamecast. I think he’s playing left wing most of the time but I’m not sure.

In November, he was definitely playing full back (see game vs. Schalke).
He’s definitely not a ‘forward’ though.
    Cheers!

  20. They’ve listed him as a FW for over a year now. To answer your question; they don’t have a clue where he is playing. He appears to be at RB according to other sources.

  21. Has anyone been watching the Nurnberg over the past several weeks? When not injured, ESPN has been listing Timmy Chandler as a Forward. He’s listed as a MF today, but wondering if anyone knew whether Timmy was actually playing FW and how he looked.

  22. Newcastle have been second best the entire half. Can’t complain about the penalty, Williamson had a hold of his shirt, but it would be nice to see some consistency on this call, especially if it comes up again in the game.
