Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

The race at the top of the English Premier League table is getting tougher by the week, and that tightening competition will make today's showdown between Tottenham and Manchester United all the more important.

Arsenal's recent run of form suddenly has the Gunners just four points behind Tottenham for third place in the Premier League, meaning Spurs don't have much room for error. They'll look to hold serve at home against a Manchester United side looking to close the gap on Manchester City for first place to two points with a road win.

Sunday's action also features some intense derbies, as Roma and Lazio collide in the Rome Derby, while Newcastle and Sunderland clash in the Tyne-Wear Derby.

If you are hoping to see some Americans in action, look no further than the Bundesliga, where TSG Hoffenheim is in action. Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams started in the U.S. national team's win against Italy, and should play roles for Hoffenheim against Cologne.

  1. I see Spurs dropping points in 6 of their remaining matches. Chelsea has new skipper Gunners are very hot. There may be a battle for 3rd and 4th.

  2. I think he’s outgrown Liverpool at the moment in terms of potential suitors – he can’t score like Carroll that’s for sure. I don’t believe he’ll move to another club in England if he leaves Fulham – he’s headed to the continent to a CL club.

  3. In Serie A action, Inter down 2-0 against Catania in the first 45. they pull back two late to make it 2-2 in the 80th minute. 84th now and Inter have created a few more chances. Very exciting contest in the final minutes.

  4. Probably so. Manager puts him on the injured list to keep Klinsmann from making a call-up. Smart move for a team that needs every point it can get. Hopefully Chandler still wishes to play for the US. I believe he can still switch.

  5. If Dempsey wants to play European football, particularly Champions League football, next year, he isn’t going to be playing in ‘Pool.

  6. So, um, was Chandler never really injured? It just seems like a miraculous recovery/very convenient timing. I would say it makes sense that his coach wouldn’t want to release him, but the game was in Europe. I don’t know, maybe the extra three or so days really made the difference…

  7. Yeah, according to the Europa League webpage he only has 1 goal, but Wikipedia says 3. This also isn’t counting the post keeper ‘own goal’ which the dubious goals panel might overturn.

  8. So Deuce now has 16 goals across all competitions(12 in the PL leaving him tied for 7th, 3 in the FA Cup, and 1 in the Europa League). Where does that place him among all time American scorers in the EPL? I presume he’ll have a hard time breaking the non-PL scoring record which I think is Bradley’s with 25 with Heereveen(Sp)?

  9. Right, you’re an Arsenal fan so presumably you “detest” Spurs. Therefore, your “…and I’m a Gunners fan…” statement would only discredit your opinion on a Tottenham call, no? (By the way I totally agree with you, Adebayor clearly handled, just think your Gunner statement was irrelevant.)

  10. Yeah definite handball, no real controversy on that one.

Not sure if your gunners disclaimer is to make you sound more impartial… or less.

  11. Ben Foster… has that sharp face with an edge and a gritty tough look… plus I would imagine Foster could at least not look retarded running around on the field when filming footballing scenes…

  12. So you like both arsenal AND chelsea to overtake them? The same chelsea side that just lost to west brom?

Obviously there are no sure things, but spurs are still heavy favorites to finish top four.

  13. Commentators for ManU v. Spurs said Giggs is at 901 club appearances. Apparently, he needs 2 more (?) to break Paolo Maldini’s record. Phenomenal stuff.

  14. Spurs are toast. They’ll have a difficult time holding 4th. Harry put out a side that one could not see being top of table, Livemore, Saha, Sandro, etc, no Bale, VDV, or Parker. What’s worst, Moldric is in terrible form. Also both Spurs FBs were beaten for goals once more.

  15. Williams interviewed at halftime of the hoffenheim game for sky. He was asked about the usmnt and jk, but I don’t speak german so I couldn’t tell you what was said.

  16. Controversy in the two games featuring americans. Hoffenheim have a goal disallowed after a questionable offside interpretation. Spurs have one wiped out for an adebayor handball.

  17. Dempsey needs a film on his life ready before the WC in 2014. whose with me?

what A-list star can pull off a performance of Deuce? I want Soderbergh to direct

  18. Johnson starting at left back for hoffenheim. Neither williams nor gyau made the matchday roster. From yahoo.uk.

I assume williams is serving an accumulation suspension as he took a yellow in their last game. But I don’t know for sure.

  19. Hmmm, so that’s what a “perfect” hat trick is. From the P guy for Fulham, One with the left foot, one with the right foot and one with a header…Oh, and nice brace Deuce!

  20. Would have loved to see Chandler in place of Williams against Italy. However, that’s only because of the rest of the injuries that we had on the team. I think we’re still best putting Chandler at LB and Fabian on LW as long as dolo is performing…although to be honest I am excited about the prospect of Chandler at RB and Fabian at LB given how stacked we are in the midfield (just as long as that doesn’t mean Danny Williams is at RW of course).

  21. quite interesting since he had only 1 goal in 14 matches for Stuttgart this season before joining. Fulham need to shove out the money to keep him

  22. After pobryankzk’s hat trick today, there are now 43 players who have equalled or surpassed the combined five league goals scored by torres and carroll.

They were overpriced, is what I’m saying.

  23. I don’t know. After watching Bolton the past couple weeks, I don’t see how they stay up. They just seem inept and disorganized all over the field. I hope they stay up for the sake of Ream and Holden, but their only hope seems to be other bottom dwellers just being worse somehow.
