Americans Abroad: Monday Rewind

Clint Dempsey just cannot and will not stop scoring.

Just as Fulham looked set for defeat against Chelsea in their Monday match-up, Dempsey headed home the equalizer to give Fulham a 1-1 draw. The goal was Dempsey's third in his last two games and gives him 22 across all competitions this season.

On a day where over two dozen Americans had games, Dempsey was not the only American to find the back of the net. Mike Grella opened his account for League One side Bury, netting the opener in a 4-1 win over Colchester United. The goal was Grella's first for any club since bagging four in one game last November.

One player who did not score, but did make his professional debut was Billy Schuler. The former North Carolina forward came off the bench in stoppage time in Hammarby's 1-0 win against Halmstad, a match that marked Gregg Berhalter's official debut as a head coach for Hammarby. Ryan Miller started, played 90 minutes and received a yellow card for Halmstad in the second division Sweden match.

  1. Except Dempsey isn’t a forward. He played there yesterday because Johnson, Pogrebnyak, and Ruiz were all unavailable. I haven’t looked it up, but you could probably count on one hand the number of times Dempsey has started up top this season.

  2. Clint definitely has to be in the running for Team of the Season?

if it’s a 4-4-2. then it’s definitely RVP with Ba or Dempsey

  3. Does Baggio Husidic count as an American Abroad? He also plays at Hammarby now, and actually started and played most (if not all) of the match today. It’s nice that Billy Schuler played 1 minute, but I thought Baggio would be included, too.

  4. Holden injured, Gooch injured. I meant among currently healthy USMNT players.
I’m a big Lichaj fan but he doesn’t offer as much offensively (aside from those nice throw-ins), I prefer him as backup to both fullback positions, or starting at LB if Johnson is used as a winger.

  5. And final ought, he made clint look humble! Haha okay, i really like deuce, and this video, and not to take anything away from clint, but murphy as well! FFC!

  6. and it was especially nice considering that clint isn’t as eloquent and is not going to brag on himself either, for murphy to promote him like that. Coming from him in the press, might just help him clint the team he wants. : ) all coaches want a hard worker, but it is hard to know that until the player arrives. not any more thanks to D Murph!

  7. Nobody is suggesting Clint should be a manager, so I’ll agree there. However, I thought Murphy put the focus completely on Clint, and then on Frei a bit as well. Classy, but also giving them more spotlight than himself.

Which is deserved, he is on his way towards retirement and clint and frei still need to promote themselves to reach their peaks. I think Murphy would make a great manager. Hell, he is older than Ben Olsen! : )

  8. yea i think he’ll keep the goal. it was deflected, but if you look it only turned the ball in about 2 or 3 yards inside the post, it was probably going right at the post, who knows if it would have bounced in or out. they will usually give them the benefit of the doubt unless it is way off the mark.

  9. Not to take anything away from Clint, but Murphy stole the video for me. He’s composed, smart, tactful and thoughtful in his answers. I can definitely see him as a manager in the Prem someday.

  10. Disagree. If you watch the replay you will see him move his arm down trying to block the ball with his right arm and hand before it goes in. he may have brushed it actually. Total do-uche, but agree this is nothing new or big for Terry.

  11. I thought that at first but check the direction of the ball on the lone overhead replay… it could very well have been going directly to the inner post and in most cases they call that good enough on frame and award the goal to the player… he already had that wonder strike of a goal taken away since it hit off the keepers back… I think the FA statisticians will give him the benefit of the doubt…

  12. …”I’ve trained with anyone like this man. I’m telling you he is unbelievable…”

Amazing to hear Deuce finally getting some of that respect.

  13. WOW Thanks so much David. I was impressed when Danny first complimented Clint. But then when he just goes on and on I got goosebumps. Very very high compliments from a very very well respected man. Cheers to Clint!

Without the compliments, this video is amazing. With them it is extraordinary. : )

    Thanks again.

  15. Instead of Shea types on the wing I’d like to see this:

    —-Altidore——-
    Donovan-Dempsey-Gomez
    —Jones-Bradley—
    FJ-Boca-Ream-Chandler
    ——Howard——–

  16. You can pay Torres big money and put him on a top team…but he doesnt score goals. You can pay Balotelli big money and put him on a top team, but he can kill the locker room. So for Clint besides age I just dont see any reason to put a good class act player that works great on a team and scores goals in big games in the mid or even as a striker if needed. There are guys on teams better then FFC and making more then clint…i think it is time that one of these top teams brings him on. Hes not a “US player” that a team has to fear people thinking he was bought to appeal to the US audience (if that is even a fear) but one of the top players period. If the EPL’s top 4 or 5 are not ready to take him I hope he goes to a big team in Italy or Germany or France…I hope he stays in the EPL….but I cant wait to see what he does on the big stage for a power team if he leaves FFC.

  17. Yeah, I’m as big a hater of Terry as there is, but I think the hands up was a protest for what he deems to be a foul. No deal at all….

  18. He had his arm up before the shot. It looked like he was claiming that Etuhu was grabbing him on the play. After the goal went in he still had his arms up looking around for a call.

  19. Whoever it was on Chelsea that put their hands up to try and block Clint’s header is pathetic. I know, I know, it’s a part of the game, but to me, anyone that would purposely block a goal-bound attempt like that after they’ve gotten beat has no honor or sense of fair play. I’m glad it went in!

  21. Yes indeed – not quite a killer strike, more of a glancing blow, by Gary Cahill’s left bun-cheek.

I actually think Clint should still get credit.

Is there any way you could make this a regular thing, i.e. a midweek review? Maybe not now but even a couple of weeks ago, there were plenty of Americans playing in midweek action(Herc, Europa League, etc.).
Any way you could put up Tony Taylor’s goal from Portugal’s 2nd division?

    Thanks

  23. Who said his phone isn’t ringing off the hook? He just made a public announcement that he will wait till summer to make a decision about staying at Fulham or leaving. Must have said that for a reason. He is smart to wait.
