Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Michael Bradley (AP)

By FRANCO PANIZO

Michael Bradley has scored in a number of countries during his eight-year career, and he can now add Italy to the list.

Bradley opened his Serie A account this past Saturday when he placed a low shot to the bottom right corner of Chievo Verona's 3-2 win over Catania. Bradley's sixth-minute goal was the opener in the game, and it helped Chievo extend its unbeaten streak to four games. The win raised Chievo to ninth place in the Serie A standings.

Clint Dempsey also found the back of the net, continuing his fine run of form with a two-goal performance that led Fulham to a 3-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Dempsey scored on a free kick for the first time in his career in the match before heading in a cross to raise his goals scored season total to 21 across all competitions.

The two other Americans to tally goals this weekend both did so in Mexico. DaMarcus Beasley scored his third goal in Puebla's last five games by netting the equalizer in the club's 2-1 win over Toluca, and Joe Corona rifled in the winner in Tijuana's 2-1 victory versus Atlante.

What do you think of these performances? Think Bradley will score again before the Serie A season is over? How many more times do you see Dempsey finding the back of the net this campaign? Hoping to see Beasley and Corona called in for the upcoming U.S. men's national team camp in May?

  2. yeah, torres, gomez and corona need to be called up. along with lichaj and beasley.

i know JK wanted to bring in 3 keepers, but given hamid’s injury, i say we bring in two keepers and 21 field players:

    ST: dempsey, jozy, gomez, adu
MID: bradley, jones, LD, shea, beasley, williams, corona, torres, beasley, edu
DEF: lichaj, chandler, johnson, boca, gooch, ream, dolo
    GK: howard, guzan

  3. This must be a new record for a US defender, got a yellow card while suspended!

Carlos Bocanegra started, played 90 minutes and received a yellow card for Rangers. He was serving a suspension for being ejected from last week’s game.

  4. Wow. Just wow. Thanks for the history lesson, but hey I didn’t watch Donovan at the 2002 WC(sarcasm.) I realise that Donovan scored a few goals at 22, but Donovan was also playing “every game” for the USMNT at the age of 22. And yes Donovan was inconsistent at 22. Donovan also takes penalties, so his goal scoring numbers are quite skewed. Brek Skea MLS best IX was one of the finalists for MLS MVP last year, played int he 2011 MLS cup, has created more scoring chances than Dempsey has under Klinsmann. See I can give you stats as well. Shea’s job is to create goal scoring chances because he is a “Winger.” Oh and I didn’t compare pedigree I compared inconsistencies laddie.

  5. Lichaj is definitely coming back to good form. And the great part is he can play either right or left back. Hopefully he’ll get the US MNT call. He can be a great asset off the bench or even cause Johnson to move up to left mid. Some good competition for the left side possible. Johnson, Beasley, Shea, and Lichaj. Competition is never a bad thing.

  6. I imagine that this feature is just a huge cut and paste job that they update each week and someone forgot to delete the suspension comment from last week?

  7. well the younger players like Brek must know that if they don’t perform well, then they don’t play.. So Beasley can be used for more than just relief.. he can be a definate motivator

  8. @King: Not that steveo needs anyone to come to his defense, but if you read the whole thread, you’ll see that he is responding to: “Donovan and Dempsey were just as inconsistent if not more at the same age as Shea.”

As for the “passive aggressive condescension” — I didn’t see it that way at all.

  9. Ives: Shouldn’t the Holden write-up include some mention of Bolton’s decision to sit him out for the rest of the season?

Here’s to hoping for an exceptional return to fitness for Stu, and for Bolton to stay up.

Stu will surely be a factor in the latter stages of WCQ.
