Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

By FRANCO PANIZO

Seeing Eric Lichaj's name in Aston Villa's starting line-up might become a frequent occurrence in the coming weeks after he put together a performance that he likely will not forget for the rest of his career.

Making his first Premiership start since December 2010, Lichaj almost single-handedly rescued Aston Villa from defeat against Chelsea. Down 2-0, the Villans cut the deficit when Lichaj launched a long throw-in that was headed home. Lichaj then pulled Aston Villa level, scoring his first goal in the Premier League with a diving effort following a cross from the left. Unfortunately for Aston Villa, Chelsea scored late to take a 4-2 win.

Lichaj was not the only player with that type of performance in the Premiership this weekend. Clint Dempsey paved the way for a Fulham win by scoring his 19th goal across all competitions in the second minute of Fulham's 2-1 triumph over Norwich City. Dempsey went from scorer to provider shortly after, delivering a pinpoint pass that Damien Duff buried into the back of the net.

Jozy Altidore also scored this weekend, netting his 15th goal in all competitions this season in AZ Alkmaar's 2-2 draw with Vitesse Arnhem. Altidore scored the opener when he headed home a cross from the left in the first half of a match that kept AZ within two points of Eredivisie leaders Ajax.

What do you think of these performances? Think Lichaj will get more starts in the near future? How many more goals do you see Dempsey scoring this season? Expecting Altidore to carry his goal-scoring ways over to the U.S. men's national team this summer?

  1. If you think Edu, Goodson and Spector are going to fall out of the picture after the Italy win, you must not follow the players or team very closely. Edu put in arguably the 3rd best performance of that game after Bradley and Bocanegra. He’s had an off year in a USMNT jersey (hopefully ended after the last W), but he’s quality.

Spector is currently injured, but I guarantee he impressed JK with his latest performance.

Castillo has played well in the Mexican league recently, but it’s doubtful he is ever going to be able to deal with the physicality of international play. Plus, we’ve got Fabian, Chandler, and possibly Lichaj who can rank ahead of him in pecking order.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind dropping Buddle and Bunbury. Boyd has shown he’s ready for the 1st team, even if he’s not getting minutes with Dortmund. That team is just too loaded to change anything up now. Think Afellay at Barca.

We’ll have to see about Beckerman since JK seems to have a man crush on him. I could see Larentowicz falling off the radar. It’s doubtful Danny Williams disappears anytime soon, either.

Also, Cameron and Parkhurst aren’t likely to disappear, either. There’s a reason they both made the trip to Italy. They both have pace and can distribute, and our CB pool isn’t THAT deep.

  2. Your memory is faulty. Jay D and Gooch were excellent in the Confederations Cup but in the run up to the World Cup Demerit missed a lot of games with his eye injury and never really settled once he got back. His speed and positioning were found wanting in the Ghana game.

The two center backs and the keeper proved unreliable when it counted in the World Cup.

Whitbread has been given chances but he keeps getting hurt at the worst possible times. My theory is he is trying to make Holden feel better about untimely injuries.

  3. Chandler is a better left back than Johnson.

Johnson is adequate but the US needs hi m more up front, particularly as Donovan is AWOL, maybe for a while.

  4. He won’t. Bradley knows him, so threw him a bone with a call in to camp. He’s not getting past that stage even with Bradley, and certianly not with a new coach who probably has never heard of him.

  5. Unless you have a time machine and can go back and prevent stupid curfew breaking and life threatening car crashes, that ain’t happening.

  6. His game was pretty much about intensity and quickness. He nearly lost his life in that car accident, it is no surprise he no longer has the quickness or ability to work tirelessly that he once had. It is still an open question of whether he will regain enough of that physicality to use his skills as has effectively as he once did.

  8. Jermaine Jones started, played 90 minutes and received a yellow card in Schalke 04’s …

Is this again the standard cut and paste, now that is not: Jermaine Jones is serving an eight game suspension ?

  9. What happened to Ryan Miller in Sweden? Did he get cut, or simply an omission? I know he got a sniff with the Nats during one of Bradley’s camps, though I have no idea if he’ll get another in the future.

  11. I believe Torres got another assist this weekend. Just like last week, but no note or video in here.

Anyway, great weekend for us! On Dempsey’s goal, Ruiz beats Whitbread, twice. So from that view, it’s too bad. But good finish by Dempsey.

Incredible for Lichaj! Can’t wait to see him back in the fold. We need him badly! Ream and Bolton getting it done!

I wish Williams had played more, any idea as to why he got benched? Too bad that Gyau, Boyd and Wooten didn’t make the roster. But it’s nice that Morales did, even though he didn’t play.

Holy crap Ricardo Clark got minutes! Strange to see Mix not make the bench. Nice to see Gatt continue his play, time to bring him into camp.

For our guys in Mexico, Beasley absolutely has to be called up, as well as Gomez. I’m assuming Herc was out because of rest or a minor knock? Also, Orozco and Castillo have started and played 90 minutes in just about every single game for the past few months. Castillo needs to be given another chance given our situation at full back. Even if it is a depth role. Orozco will have a harder time given how many CBs are in the rotation. Lastly, great to see Corona getting back into his club role.

  12. Holden’s knee was ripped open by a reckless challenge last year, then required a follow-up surgery earlier this year. Definitely a game-changing injury, but everyone knew that months ago…

  13. I agree that Ream is the eventual future at CB and has the best ball handling skills at that position, but his actual defending lack of skill and ineptness at winning the ball in the air is scary at the NAT team level, more than 1/4 season at Bolton is in order. DeMerit is younger than Boca and was arguably our best CB in WC 2010 and qualifying, unfairly falling off the JK radar I think. I do agree that Whitbread deserves at least a chance to prove himself one way or the other.
