Conde could miss a month with groin injury

The New York Red Bulls are scoring goals at an astronomical pace these days, and they may wind up needing every one of the goals Thierry Henry and Kenny Cooper are scoring to keep on winning.

The Red Bulls are set to be without standout defender Wilman Conde for up to a month after the Colombian defender injured his groin during the team's practice session on Thursday. The injury is a major blow for a defense that has struggled to put together consistent performances without Conde.

Conde, who had already missed three of the team's first five matches with injury and fitness issues, had looked sharp in his two starts for the club, but more importantly, he had helped provide a stabilizing force in central defense.

Without Conde, the Red Bulls will be forced to lean on centerback Markus Holgersson, who has looked shaky at times as he adapts to his first season in MLS. Stephen Keel should step into the starting lineup, though you wonder if Hans Backe will consider bringing Rafa Marquez back into central defense.

The timing of the injury means Conde could miss as many as six matches, which would put him at just two matches played out of the Red Bulls first 11.

  1. This is a guy whose clear, demonstrable recent injury history should’ve eliminated him from contention as a player you build a defense around.

It would be like going out and spending $$$ on Ledley King or Jonathan Woodgate.

  2. Great player Conde but injury prone…great job RBNY for buying an injury prone player, not the first time remember Reyna? sick of this club no matter how good they are doing today

  3. At the end of the day, a good pickup that Conde. Maybe it would be better to say poor handling of a potentially good pickup. He didn’t play at all last year, right?

  4. I suppose this should say he RE-injured his groin in practice, as the original injury came against Montreal. Is it legitimate to question why he was on the practice field, and vulnerable to aggravating his injury? I know, I know — soccer is tough, everybody gets some injuries, etc., etc. But RBNY’s injuries always seem to be of the non-contact strain/pull variety. They’re going to have to score 4 against San Jose.

  5. So far this season: Conde > Kheel > Holgersson

If the Red Bulls are going after players before the transfer deadline, they should be seeking a centerback first and then attacking mid, gk, back-up speedy forward (if one of the reserves does not fit this description) and Visa reapplication for Luke.

  6. You are a nice guy Ives! “Shaky at times” is definitely nicer than “solely responsible for multiple goals allowed. I’m one bitter S.O.B. but 16 years of losing will do that to you I guess.
