The Vancouver Whitecaps made history by being the MLS team with the longest start to a season without conceding a goal, and then they proceeded to give up three in a short span.

Led by a brace from Chris Wondolowski, the San Jose Earthquakes scored three times in 11 minutes to defeat the Whitecaps, 3-1, at Buck Shaw Stadium on Saturday evening. The result marked Vancouver's first defeat of the year, and improved San Jose to 4-1 on the season.

The Whitecaps opened the scoring in the game through a strike from Sebastien Le Toux four minutes after halftime. The visitors then broke the MLS record for most minutes to start a season without surrendering a goal, but that was short lived as San Jose responded soon after.

Wondolowski scored his fifth goal of the season off a throw in from Ramiro Corrales in the 68th minute, and four minutes later Alan Gordon gave the Earthquakes the lead with a diving header. Wondolowski added an insurance goal when he got on the end of a free kick from Tressor Moreno 12 minutes from the death.

  1. Bernadez is on another level and Morrow has done a surprisingly steady job next to him. Vancouver held firm until Gordon took some of the physical challenge off of Wondo’s shoulders. Quakes are looking very deep this year.

  2. Did Vancouver really break the record? I could be wrong, but I thought they had to get to the 80th minute without conceding to set the record, and the Quakes scored in the 68th minute…

  3. Great work by Yallop to make the early sub and get Gordon on in the 50th minute.

Why is Vancouver defense leaving Wondo wide open in the 6 yard box on the third goal.

    Muma Bernardez is a beast.

  4. Vancouver tried to park it, but the Quakes came through with some nice finishing. Bernardez remains in beast mode, and I’ll go ahead and say that he may be the best addition to league this season. Solid win. Go Quakes!

  5. The Earthquakes responded well after conceding the first goal. The subs Frank made really gave the team a boost. Nice to see the depth on the team. I think Wondo can score around twenty goals at the rate he’s going. It’s going to be tough going up against Henry and NY later this week. Oh, and Bernardez continues to show that he is a beast.
