Late Pontius goal gives United win over Revolution

D.C. United looked ready for a third draw in their last four games, but Chris Pontius changed that when he scored his first goal since returning from the injury that sidelined him for the end of last season.

Pontius gave United a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium on Saturday, curling a right-footed shot in the 82nd minute. The goal, Pontius' first since last August, came three minutes after he entered the match and improved United to 2-2-2 on the year.

New England newcomer Jose Moreno opened his scoring account when he gave the 2-4 Revolution the lead six minutes after the opening whistle. Moreno struck the ball into the back of the net with a nice finish following a beautiful cross from Saer Sene, but that would not be enough to get the Revolution back in the win column.

Maicon Santos continued his strong start to the season by equalizing with a first-half header after a bicycle kick from Dwayne De Rosario put the ball in his path. That score, combined with New England's inability to finish, allowed for Pontius' late-game heroics.

Here are the match highlights:

  1. With Najar in the starting lineup 0-2…without him 2-0-2. Let’s keep things the way they are right now Deleon and Cruz are playing very well for us out there.

  2. The fact that neither he nor Andy had to play 90′ show just how stacked our midfield is. I’m expecting big things against Montreal.

  3. CP is back! Him and Andy back on the field together this week…Hopefully pick up 3 more points vs. Montreal (!) before next weekend’s showdown at RFK….VAMOS!
