Red Bulls keep on rolling, trounce Columbus

The New York Red Bulls forward tandem of Thierry Henry and Kenny Cooper continued their assault on MLS defenses on Saturday, combining for four goals in a 4-1 thrashing of the Columbus Crew in Columbus.

Cooper jumped all over the Crew with a pair of early goals that helped the Red Bulls take complete control of a lethargic Crew side that offered little resistence in the first half. Cooper scored New York's first two goals, including a sublime header to make it 2-0. Henry added a third goal before halftime to put the home team into an even deeper hole.

The Crew showed much more life in the second half, but Red Bulls goalkeeper Ryan Meara made several key saves while the Crew also missed their share of simple chances. Columbus finally broke through with a consolation goal from Chad Marshall late, but that goal only seemed to anger Thierry Henry, who came right down and blasted home his second goal of the match in the match's final minute to make the final score 4-1.

The win, New York's third in a row, keeps the Red Bulls in second place in the Eastern Conference, behind unbeaten Sporting Kansas City.

What did you think of the Red Bulls' performance? Impressed with Cooper's form? Surprised by the Crew's offensive struggles? Think Ballouchy can keep it going?

  1. Three thoughts:

    1) Where are all those pundits who said RBNY gave up too much for Cooper?

    2) RBNY gets grief that it doesn’t sell out every game. Where were the Columbus fans yesterday? Disguised as yellow seats?I thought the crew was MASSIVE!!!

    3) Was there anything funnier than Henry scoring a minute after the Crew did? Man, that shut the 9 seats that weren’t empty up.

  2. Very nice win by RBNY. Ballouchy played very well on the wing. I questioned putting Ballouchy in for Lindpere, but it seemed to pay off.

  3. This was just a pathetic showing from the yellow soccer team. Came out flat at home, didn’t have a game plan that would work against RBNY, and got punished as a result. I think this is what we’re going to get this year from the Crew: Beat the really bad teams, get beaten by the decent-to-good teams. I shudder to think what’s going to happen when the play an RSL or an SKC.

  4. I think Titi was an Incredible Hulk fan. “Mr. Marshall, don’t make me angry. You wouldn’t like me when I’m angry.”
