Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

Tim Howard and Everton's quest for silverware can move one step closer to bearing fruit today as the Toffees take on arch-rival Liverpool today in a highly-anticipated FA Cup semifinal showdown at Wembley Stadium (7:30 am, Fox Soccer Channel).

The Toffees have enjoyed an outstanding run of form in Premier League play, and will look to make their second FA Cup Final appearance in four years with a win against a Liverpool side that has endured a disappointing season in league play.

If the morning FA Cup edition of the Merseyside Derby is too early in the morning for you, there is plenty more soccer to choose from today. In Germany, first-place side and defending champion Borussia Dortmund will look to keep the momentum going from their impressive win against Bayern Munich by beating Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen, while Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar take on PSV Eindhoven in a key Dutch League clash between title contenders.

In Spain, Real Madrid take on Sporting Gijon while Barcelona face Levante in the final matches before their crucial Clasico showdown at Camp Nou.

  1. Hudson will be calling Boca Juniors and River Plate matches next season if GOLTV does not sell itself to Qatar Media by August.

Qatar Media blew away GOLTV-ESPN Deportes and Univision Deportes Network for U.S. media rights to La Liga starting next season. The bid by Qatar Media exceeded the annual subscriber revenue of GOLTV and ESPN Deportes COMBINED.

beIN Sports USA should launch by August.

Don’t know yet how Qatar Media will air el Clasico next season. The “early favorite” is Telemundo (via a time-buy agreement.)

  2. Tecos only have 2 games left. The max possible points they can have in the relegation standings is 106; Atlas has 3 games left and is currently at 104. Tecos need to win both of theirs AND have Atlas gain no more than 2 points.

(I’m not sure what happens if two teams finish equal ppg average from an equal number of games played, so if Tecos win both of theirs and Atlas draws twice and loses once, I don’t know who’s getting relegated).

Tecos are hosting Queretaro and at Cruz Azul. I can see them beating Q, but not CA.

Atlas, though, are hosting Monterrey and Santos and at Monarcas. They could lose all 3… but Tecos still need back-to-back wins.

  3. Ray Hudson is worth the price of admission when paying extra with your cable provider for GolTV.

He’s a homer for Barca/Real Madrid but listening to is equally entertaining as the match itself.

  4. Get a decent keeper AZ, and maybe you’ll win the title. I had high hopes Jozy could win the championship in his first season there. Now not as likely…

The call has gone viral. It was also featured on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live on Thurday night.

“AAAAAAARRRRREE YOU KIDDING ME!!! A-STONISHING!!! THIS IS NOT JUST A DREAM, IT’S A WET DREAM OF ORGASMIC PROPORTIONS!!! And this one deludes everybody, it seduces everybody in Real Madrid’s fanclub that’s for sure. The wonder strike from Cristiano. This has got more curves to it than Jessica Rabbit on steroids. Take a look at this. It’s flyin all over the job. Unbelievable! Look at that! It’s a phenomenal technique. He gets it up on the ball and it arches like an incredible rainbow. Astonishing wonder strike from Cristiano!”

  6. Relegation in Mexico can be decided tonight.

Atlas has 3 chances to reach safety. Any victory or 3 consecutive draws will do.

Tecos need a miracle: 3 wins in a row and home that Atlas lose twice and does not win again.

  7. Did anyone just hear the greatest goal call of all time on GOLTV in the Madrid vs Madrid game? Omg if not here is what the guy said…..”This is not just a dream, its a wet dream of orgasmic proportions, and this one deludes everybody, it seduces everybody at Real Madrid’s fine, that’s for sure.” I don’t know who it is but this announcer is amazing haha

The Barra Bravas from both sides are impossible to control even during daylight hours.

  9. Carroll with a back of the head flick to give LFC the lead with 3+ change. Credit to Bellamy for nice bend and placement on the free kick.
