Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

The door has been left open for Manchester City, and today will determine whether the Citizens are serious about taking full advantage.

Manchester United's 4-4 tie with Everton early this morning means Manchester City can close the gap atop the English Premier League standings to three points with a win against Wolverhampton today. Roberto Mancini's men have hit a strong run of form lately and could draw even closer to their neighbors ahead of the Manchester Derby.

In Italy, Juventus is trying to move closer to a Serie A title, but a showdown against Roma won't be easy as the Romans have Champions League aspirations to keep alive.

If you will be watching today's action, or want to talk about the games from the early morning, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. From BPL website:

If two or more teams have equal points the following tiebreakers shall be employed: Goal Difference, Goals scored, Play-off at neutral venue (champion or relegation places only).

I guess head-to-head doesn’t factor at all. Weird. I would have though that’d be the first tiebreaker. So yes, ManCity on goal differential

  2. Anyone Fulham fans in here? Can we pretty please talk about how this season is shaping up in the home stretch? Results couldn’t have favored Fulham better today: Liverpool lose (baggies are close but fulham have a game in hand) and Everton only one point with a tie to ManU today (btw, WHAT a game!!!).

Fulham can potentially finish 7th! After the horrid start we had to the season I’d say that’s an accomplishment. And who’s to thank? Yep, you guessed it: Bryan Ruiz. Ha! Just kidding, DEUUUUUUUUCE. What a beast. What a beast season. Is Fulham going to lose Dempsey? Probably. Does Dempsey deserve to be called a Fulham legend? Hells yes. I think so. What a season. He’s Arsenal’s RVP in that he carried the whole team all season.

Where Arsenal and Fulham would be without RVP and Fulham, well it’s a lot worse. Arsenal probably in 10th and Fulham battling relegation. Come on you Whites! 3 more games (tough games to be sure) but winnable. Lets go boys! Whew. I’m pumped. Can you tell?

  3. Jozy was very physical today, Defenders bouncing off of him like Joba Chamberlain on a trampoline. No flopping today. The only downside was a couple of posts on marketable shots. The second, a header, he probably should have buried: a contested one from close range that he didn’t get cleanly but possibly should have. Granted there was a defender draped all over him, and he did a nice job of out muscling and elevating over his mark, but his aerial game remains a bit of a work in progress. I think he is getting better though!

  4. I understand, but since Man U also control their own destiny, and are ahead by three points, I’d say United are still in good position. Just giving David a hard time. haha

  5. This is really pathetic by City. I thought they would come out with a clear sense of purpose and instead they’re staggering around Molineux like a bunch to drunks. Do they have something better to do today than play football?

  6. My undefeated men’s team, Motrin FC, has a must-win game against VFC, who are 3 points back, today at 1. We’ve already tied them earlier in the season 2-2 so if we can get the win and put some separation between us we’re almost guaranteed the division championship. We’ve got another team, Dynasty, breathing down our necks level on points with VFC right now. So we MUST win.

And no guys, sorry to say I couldn’t find any links for today’s big showdown.

  7. It looks like Man City spent a little too much energy celebrating Everton’s draw this morning and left little for the small formality of their own game against Wolves.

  8. They may not be in the “drivers seat” but I guess they do pretty much control their destiny, which is what I think the original poster meant.

  9. Yeah ‘they aren’t fit to represent Genoa.’ The keeper is refusing and is arguing with a mob of fans.
Looks like they’ll play on, with ~35 minutes of added time…

Looking it up on Gazzetta, MB90 was MotM in yesterday’s game.

  10. They are? Even if City take all three points from Wolves, they’re still three behind United. Doesn’t look like any driver’s seat I’ve ever seen!

  11. Over, AZ won 2-1 thanks to Jozy’s winner.

In Genoa, the Ultras invaded the pitch, and for the last ~20 minutes, the captain and a few other players/club officials have been negotiating with them. Weird, weird stuff. The Ultras demanded all the players’ shirts.

  12. City are officially back in the driver’s seat in the Premiership!! Hopefully the lads don’t feel the pressure like we did 6 weeks ago… Should be a great run in for the neutrals though!

  13. True stuff. Can’t wait to see how Jozy and Clint do together/off of one another with Landon lurking somewhere in the midfield to provide some decent service. He’ll probably go left with Chandler on the right, at least, that’s what I hope for.

  14. ….I can’t tell if that’s a V and a W or a W and a V or a zigzag or some sort of letter my Kindergarten teacher fudged…

  15. I remember one of the earlier ‘weekend rewind’ posts from this season, where Jozy, Clint, and one other American scored, and everyone was stoked at how great the weekend was for Americans.
Now it’s fairly commonplace-the did not dress issue is much less.

    Let the good times roll!
