Soccer Wednesday: Your Running Commentary

It is an extremely packed and important day across Europe, as games with massive implications take place across the continent.

In England, Manchester United can take another step forward to another league title with a win at Wigan, while Manchester City has to top West Brom at home to hang on to its glimmer of hope. The title races are a bit more fierce in Germany, where second-place Bayern Munich can pull into first with a win at league-leading Borussia Dortmund; and in Italy, where unbeaten Juventus can reclaim first place with a win over third-place Lazio.

Real Madrid is feeling the pressure in Spain, with its one-time 10-point lead down to one (with a game in hand) over hard-charging Barcelona. In order to restore the four-point edge, Jose Mourinho's side will need to fend off rival Atletico Madrid with the final Clasico of the season looming in a couple weekends.

If you will be watching any of Wednesday's games, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action (TV schedule is after the jump):

  1. speaking of…when the F is PS3 gonna get on board with espn3. I know espn3 is XBox’s big justification for charging an annual fee, but isn’t about time the exclusivity comes to an end?

  2. So again why do USMNT fans hate on Jozy so much??? Man if only he was young and had a lot of time to get even better? What’s that you say he’s only 22????

  3. Slick 2nd goal by Jozy… Played a 1-2 with the midfielder, beautiful touch to take him past the defender, decisive placement on a low hard shot into the bottom corner. VERY impressive.

  4. This AZ defense is so willing to collapse all the way back into the box. What a soft approach! It seems to work in that they have the best GA in the league but it sure looks weird.

And that falling back style led directly to Twente’s first goal.

  5. Thanks marco. He does score goals now with his head and is getting a little better, but this is certainly an aspect he needs to improve on. With his size, strength, and leaping ability, he could be much more potent in the air once he gets his timing and body control worked out.

  6. This has been the running theme all season. If you start the drinking game for every time he takes 3 touches you will be wasted with 60 minutes to play.

Elm/Maartens just want the ball too much. When they play quickly (fast build up) they look great (Could win the league).

  7. AZ winger had Jozy open but decided to take 3 extra touches, allowed the defender to close and turned it over. Way too much dribbling there.

  8. Anyone who saw the goal care to describe it please? Power header, placement header or more of a wide open nudge into the net?

  9. That was the softest goal I have ever seen. Not sure what the defense was doing. Maybe he thought that the forward might have been offside (but he was inactive).

You have to admit that Luke De Jong was not wasteful.
