The Portland Timbers are making a habit of signing the sons of former Colombian internationals.

The Timbers announced Monday that they added 18-year-old forward Sebastian Rincon on loan for the 2012 season from Uruguay outfit Atletico Atenas. Rincon is the son of former Colombian national team forward Freddy Rincon, who played in three World Cups during his 18-year career.

The younger Rincon has been training with the Timbers since February and played in the club's MLS Reserve League game versus the San Jose Earthquakes on March 27.

He joins 20-year-old forward Jose Adolfo Valencia, the offspring of former striker Adolfo 'El Tren' Valencia, as sons of former Colombia internationals currently on Portland's roster.

What do you think of Portland signing Rincon? Do you see him making a splash in MLS? Which Colombian will have their son signed next by the Timbers?

  1. Portland sucks. They should be trying to figure out how to stop goals late, but they are not. I for one am stoked about this move, just more proof that they are headed in the wrong direction.

  2. That’s what I was thinking MLS ought to try to get their games broadcasted down there. I’m Colombian and I’m for whatever keeps soccer in the US going, if the MLS can make more money by broadcastibg in Colombia or all of SA I’m for it. I’m a little confused as why MLS is in love with Colombian footballers though. I guess its cuz Colombia is the second largest country in SA and prolly cheaper than getting Brazilian, Argentine and Uruguayan footballers.

  4. We’re going to win the League!

    [in 3-5 years]

Seriously, if we can keep a core group of these youngsters around the Timbers may be threatening in 2-4 years. Teams playing well in MLS today have had core groups of 5-10 players on their roster for 4 or more years.

  5. I’m glad for the signing but could we get a couple of those outside backs? And maybe a defensive mid while you’re at it. I know there are a couple of trialists for the outside back spots. Just sayin’ offense is lookin’ better despite the LA game result.

Defense been shakey for a while now.

  6. Do they broadcast any MLS games in Colombia?
If MLS keeps acquiring Colombian talent at this rate for a few more years, this could be the #2 league to follow for Colombian fans.

  7. Well, he certainly has a great pedigree, as does Trencito. Not with the biggest club in the world, but I guess this will be a chance for him to showcase himself, looking for a permanent move. If these guys work out to even a quarter of their dads’ skills, the Timbers will do all right.
