Late Gordon goal gives Earthquakes draw versus Crew

Alan Gordon came through in the clutch to prevent the San Jose Earthquakes from losing for the second straight week, and this time he did so in spectacular fashion.

A week after heading home a late equalizer against Chivas USA, Gordon repeated his late-game heroics by scoring a sideways bicycle kick in the last minute of regulation to give the Earthquakes a 1-1 draw versus the Columbus Crew at Buck Shaw Stadium.

The Crew seemed destined for a win after Justin Meram bent a beautiful shot far post at the end of the first half and following several fine saves from goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum, who denied Chris Wondolowski on a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.

Gordon, however, had other plans. The Earthquakes forward unleashed a shot that smacked off the crossbar and out, and he raced to the ball and smashed it home with an acrobatic effort in the dying seconds.

Here are the match highlights:

What do you think of the Earthquakes' 2-2 draw with the Crew? How impressed are you by Gruenebaum's performance? Whose goal impressed you more, Meram's or Gordon's?

  1. The EQs had more than several chances. It was ridiculous that they somehow didn’t score (until the very end). This could have easily been an 8-1 blowout.
