Manchester City win Premier League with thrilling stoppage time comeback

The trophy looked lost, but Manchester City never gave up, even as stoppage time ticked away and City needed two goals to lift the Premier League title trophy.

Trailing Queens Park Rangers 2-1, and needing a win to secure their first title in 44 years, City staged a comeback for the ages. Edin Dzeko's equalizer and Sergio Aguero's magical game-winning finish helped give Manchester City a 3-2 victory and the Premier League title.

The comeback spoiled Manchester United's bid for the title, which the club thought it had in hand when its 1-0 victory over Sunderland ended. City changed everything with two late goals scored against a QPR side playing a man down after Joey Barton's red card.

City's comeback capped a thrilling day in the Premier League. A day that saw Arsenal come from behind to beat West Brom and finish third, and QPR stay up thanks to Stoke City's 2-2 tie vs. Bolton. The draw doomed Bolton to relegation.

Tottenham finished fourth in the Premier League after a 2-0 victory against Fulham, but must root for a Chelsea loss in the UEFA Champions League Final to ensure their own place in the Champions League next season.

What did you think of Survival Sunday? Was it the craziest, most exciting day of soccer you can remember? Did you come away happy, or devastated by the results?

  1. I will remember today 10 years from now I will not remember last years playoffs or final even 2 years from now. The only way last year was special was if your a Galaxy fan.

  2. So true. I love some of the comments from United fans (not the one above) questioning the 5 added minutes. Ya know, Fergie time, as it’s now called.

  3. “Honestly, United is one of the few teams in all of sports where you expect them to win a title almost every season. I’ve been spoiled”

Which is why all of the non-front running fans were elated with the manner in which United missed out on the title this year.

  4. Also, I don’t expect City to begin the season even remotely as well as they did last year. Silva is going to be exhausted after Euro 2012/playing with an ankle injury for half the season, and teams know what to expect from them now. Here’s hoping SAF has the balls to go for the offensive when they play each other…

  5. That was just unbelievable. As a United fan, I would have preferred City had won 5-0. To be literally ten seconds from winning the title and have City score two goals in f’ing stoppage time, I mean, when will that ever happen again. City deserved to win the title, but to win it that way, that sucks. Obviously I can’t complain since most United players have at least four times as many titles as the City players, and the soccer fan in me is (unfortunately/not really) happy for the City fans, but to come that close to City choking, crap and a half. Honestly, United is one of the few teams in all of sports where you expect them to win a title almost every season. I’ve been spoiled. That said, a subpar United team lost on goal difference to an insanely stacked and expensive City team that basically had zero injuries all season, and it’s not hard to argue that if Vidic was healthy they would have won the title rather easily. Next season City will not be so lucky, and they can’t spend ridiculous amounts of money anymore. Injuries to any one of Sliva, Yaya, or Kompany and City are f’ed. Welbeck, Smalling, Cleverly, De Gea, and Jones all have another years’ experience, and if they add Kagawa and Baines and hopefully a defensive mid, United can win the title back, no question…

  6. Of course days like today don’y happen often that is what makes them special! My point was the MLS will never have a day as special as today

  7. Today had more drama than the MLS has had in its entire history.

I like the MLS. I want it to succeed. But you can’t manufacture the kind of drama that the EPL had today. Nearly every game in the EPL today was meaningful in one way or another (Title race, CL, EL, or relegation). You can’t fake that. Playing to determine which team in the bottom half of the league gets a shot in the MLS’s incomprehensible playoff system is not the same thing.

  8. Unbelievable finish to a great season! ManU preparing for a Cup ceremony only to have it yanked out of their hands with 5 minutes of extra time. All the City fans are dejected looking going into ET. And then two sublime moments for them to win the Cup. Doesn’t get any better than this.

Just wish Bolton had done their part and won for Holden. And also feel a little bad for Spurs as a horrible GK gave away the game against Arsenal.

  9. Right, because days like today happen so often in English football….just like….oh wait. Most years its like the Bundesliga/Serie A/La Liga/Eredervise/Portugeuse Liga where everything is decided weeks in advance. How dramatic. Or have a playoff system that guarantees drama…..

  10. Joey Barton fully deserved his red card, if you couldn’t tell by the replay then I suggest you have your eyes examined. Based on his reaction after the fact deserves to be axed by QPR as well for bringing shame to the club. Carlos Tevez is a flopping midget but most players would have done the same in that situation, Barton has to keep his head given the circumstances, but of course we all know he is incapable of that. Barton had actually been playing quite well until then but there is no excuse.

  11. I agree with CSD here, a red card for a pretty unconvincing elbow and a dramatization by Tevez? Did Barton throw his elbow up a bit? Sure, but he didn’t throw it hard, and even though it made contact with the chin of Tevez it was a pretty soft blow and Tevez made a meal of it. Look, all I’m saying is, in every league I’ve ever played in in my life, including college, that would not have been called a red. Yellow maybe, or maybe just a foul. Just upsetting to me because of all the acting. Barton’s still an idiot, and I was rooting for City all the way so I’m glad it happened.

  12. Fergie’s look on his face is reminiscent of a bully getting his as$ handed to him.

    That made my year.

  13. Diehard sports fan.

That is the most amazing finish to a season (for a league) I’ve ever witnessed.

Can’t wait until someone in MLS management feels the same.

  14. I got a boner listening to Martin Tyler’s call. If you haven’t heard it yet, YouTube it! “Agueroooooooooooooo! You will never see anything else like this in your life! Drink it in!… Stupendous!”

I also liked Ian Darke’s call too.

  15. Just a fantastic Sunday morning. Wow! Still can’t believe it nearly 3 hours later. I so didn’t want to see ManU take another title. I had to switch channels at min. 85 during the City match. Couldn’t stand to see all those City fan’s faces they kept showing. Luckily I had DVR’d it. Watched the replay of the goals about 20 times. Congrats to City & what a nail-biter of a final EPL Matchday!

  16. Barton should have never gotten a red card that started the whole chain of events. I haven’t seen a replay that showed Barton going anywhere near Tevez’s face with an elbow. It just looks like a very typical shoulder to shoulder bump. If that is a red card no game would ever end with half the players on the pitch.

  17. Can’t say I love MCFC, but glad to see someone besides MUFC win it and loved the drama. Well done EPL!

Now let’s get our man Clint Dempsey transferred to a CL side asap!

  18. Tevez is a putz to rule them all, but come on. Gotta keep your head. Tevez knew who he was poking.

Even if we even that out, what about the kick on Aguero and the semi-headbutt on Kompany?
