MLS Match Night: Your Running Commentary

MLS_Primary_COL

Two of the hottest teams in MLS put their lengthy unbeaten streaks on the line, as the surging San Jose Earthquakes take on in-form D.C. United in the headliner on a busy night in MLS.

The New England Revolution and Colorado Rapids kick things off at Gillette Stadium, where Benny Feilhaber is back in the starting lineup for the Revs, and Colorado has had to make some changes to the back line. Seattle and Los Angeles do battle as well, with the Galaxy spotlight falling on Landon Donovan as Robbie Keane and David Beckham did not make the trip for the match.

The 2012 Canadian championship also kicks off, with the semifinals featuring three MLS teams for the first time. In the first leg of one semifinal, Montreal hosts three-time defending champion Toronto FC, who have matched the worst start in MLS history but can start to put that behind them with success in the tournament. In the other semifinal, NASL's FC Edmonton gets a crack at the Vancouver Whitecaps, who have finished as the runner up for the last three years.

Here is the viewing schedule for the night's matches:

  1. MLSLive isn’t perfect with te blackout games, no doubt. But the stream is excellent for the game shown in my experience this year

  2. All the blacked out games last year was why I didn’t reup mls live this year- and I’d done 4 years straight. Has gotten worse and more expensive almost every year.

  3. Man, what a game that was! DeRo continues to have his way with us- and woulda been MOTM if it hadn’t been for Wondo, Lenhart, Chavez, Dawkins, etc.

Quakes D continues to get it done, but we haven’t posted a shutout since losing Bernardez. Still need to tighten that part of the game up, but wow- the ball movement and well-worked goals this year are making up for four mostly dreadful seasons!

  4. I’d like to see a stat on how many of the MLSLive games are blacked out. My guess is that it’s pretty high. Here’s the thing though – given the opportunity, I’d rather be watching the game on tv than on my laptop. So the whole black out thing on MLSLive is really screwing it to the people who need it the most – those without access to watching it on tv.

Kudos to Comcast and the like for filling in the gap (even though only locally) left behind by ESPN & Fox. Maybe NBCSN will start taking a major stock in coverage. Fingers crossed for next year, ‘cuz this year’s coverage is dismal. My Crew only gets on national tv twice this year (of course maybe that’s for the better…). Still, I kinda miss the Thursday night games on the Duece – when it wasn’t being superseded by the 156th round of the NFL draft or a high school baseball game.

  5. cracker from Montero…WOW

  6. Montero is snaked bitten, but some of the problems are his own doing. He’s often too slow moving and striking the ball. He should be the first off tonight. Great goal by EJ. LB Scott has been strong.

  7. Damn shame. No showing of MLS games on ABC, NBC or CBS. Just Awful. I guess not enough Americans have grown to love the game to warrant broadcasting on National television stations.

  8. It is nice that they put the highlights up.. and I have had the MLS Live package before. But I don’t have it right now because I’m at school and my internet connection sucks. I’m also a fan of the NBA: And I see the number of games up on TNT, ESPN and NBA TV every week, in fact almost every day.. and think why doesn’t the MLS have this? Or even half of this? Hell I’d be happy with 3 or 4 games a week. But there are usually just one or two.

  9. 1,000,000 percent agree. A billion times.

It IS nice that they do offer all their games either online or with Direct Kick for a one time fee (no other league has anything like that, not that I’m aware of). But still. It’d be nice if more games were available for everyone.

I dream of the day when EVERY game is televised on basic channels in at least relevant markets (a la NFL or NBA) etc. Hopefully sooner than later.

  10. Has anyone noticed that there aren’t as many nationally televised games anymore? I know why MLS made the move to NBC, but there used to be more games on FSC, Galavision, and ESPN.. It’s just disappointing when the league is moving forward in so many other ways.
