When Sigi Schmid decided to rest some starters on Wednesday night against FC Dallas, it looked like the red-hot Sounders might just slow down.

Fredy Montero came off the bench and made sure that didn't happen.

The Colombian striker came on at halftime with the score tied 0-0 and scored two goals just three minutes apart to lift the Sounders (7-1-1) to a 2-0 victory in Frisco, Texas. The victory pushed Seattle's winning streak to five matches.

FC Dallas (3-5-3) started the match without several key starters as well, including Brek Shea and suspended duo Blas Perez and Daniel Hernandez, but still managed to contain a Sounders side that started the match without Montero and Osvaldo Alonso, among others.

The match turned mid-way through the second half when Montero delivered his second and third goals of the season to send Dallas to their fifth match without a victory.

Back-up Seattle goalkeeper Brian Meredith was outstanding in goal for the Sounders, recording five saves in the shutout.

The Sounders will look to win their sixth straight when they face West-leading Real Salt Lake on Saturday, while FC Dallas

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Consider Seattle the best team in MLS right now? Surprised by Dallas' struggles or do you think they'll turn it around once they get healthier?

Share your thoughts below.

  1. Alonso was limping at the end of the Union game on Sunday and had played every minute of the season.

They are trying to keep from wearing Rosales down, because he has two injuries suffered from players hacking him.

Estrada’s days a regular have to be numbered if the team gets healthy. They are so much better when Johnson and Montero are on the field

  2. Dallas hasn’t scored a goal during the run of play in its last 5 games (last one was against Montreal on 4/14).

I don’t have the exact figure, but of the 10 goals, FCD have scored this season, over half have come off of set pieces or penalties. Not to discount the importance of set pieces, but to say FCD’s attack lacks bite would be an understatement.

  3. Rose is Evans, just taller and younger. That’s why the midfield was a disaster. Carrasco really should have started. I’d even have been fine with a Carrasco/Rose pairing in the middle.

  4. 14/17 of FCD’s goals against have been in the second half. Youch. No excuses, but that is a young team whose inexperience is shining through. Montero’s goals were pretty great.

Strange game with both teams resting stars and missing lots of their A team.

  5. A win over RSL although just one third of the season in, would make Seattle clear favorites for Supporters Shield. Sigi is winning with his entire roster. Rose is not Alonso but he wasn’t bad. The return of El Flaco and Zakauni would seal the deal.

  6. Getting 3 points while being able to leave Alonso at home and not rush Flaco back into the fold is huge. Hoping to see Flaco, Rosales, Johnson and Montero on the field together this weekend agains RSL but my gut says we may need to wait a week for that to happen.

  7. If you think about it in terms of ideal 11 and count Mauro and Fredy as 1 and favor Ianni over Parke then you could say Burch, Parke, Scott, Meredith, Caskey, Rose and Estrada are all Backups/Reserves.

One step even further if you replace EVans with Alvaro Fernandez and put Zakuani on the wing..

  8. Atleast four (Meredith, Birch, Rose, Caskey) and some would say Scott is a reserve but he has started a couple games this year so maybe five.

  9. I was impressed with the game. I expected it to be bad with how many players FCD was missing and it look like Seattle was using a number of reserve players. Montero is a game changer and the move he made to score the first goal was great. I think the save of the week might go to the Seattle keeper.

Not a Seattle follower but how many of the starters last night were reserves?

  10. Good to see our backup GK is beyond competent, some top notch saves there. We are seriously lacking when Alonso doesn’t play, however that was already known. Nice 3 points on the road in a busy stretch of games.

  11. a. Dallas very talented but lacks savvy
    b. Sounders vulnerable without Alonso – exposes lack of pace at the back
    c. Montero maturing – patience to break out of early season drought (thanking the heavens as well)

  12. Salt to all those crying in the RBNY recap about there not being any other game coverage. And salt to Portland for being Portland.

  13. Just gotta go full strength this weekend to fight RSL and try to claim 15/15 points in this rough stretch. Have a full rest period after this weekend. Take them all!

  14. We rested some key players, kept Fredy’s form rolling, got to see some new talent, kept a clean sheet, and walked away with 3 road points … it was a good day.
