Red Bulls vs. Dynamo: Match Night Commentary

NY_Primary_COL    HOU_Primary_COL

The New York Red Bulls look to make it three wins in a row, but to do so they'll have to get by a Houston Dynamo side finally at the end of its seven-game road trip to open the season (7 p.m., MLS Live/Direct Kick).

The Red Bulls are again without Rafa Marquez, who has completed his three-game suspension but is out with an ankle injury suffered in training, according to the Red Bulls. New York will again rely on its makeshift backline that has turned in consecutive clean sheets in front of rookie goalkeeper Ryan Meara.

Houston is trotting out a bit of an experimental lineup as well, with an eye on Saturday's inaugural match at BBVA Compass Stadium. Brian Ching has been left out altogether, Andre Hainault and Will Bruin will start out on the bench and Mac Kandji and Cam Weaver will start up top. The match also marks Colin Clark's return from his three-game suspension, and he'll begin the match on the bench.

  1. I might agree with you if your comments applied only to the LAG game, but NYRB definitely created a number of chances tonight, especially in the 2d half. There was a great volley by Dax, 2 blasts by Agudelo, one on a spectacular volley off of a 50 yard pass clear across the field, a few gorgeous chips that just missed connecting, etc. Houston also certainly had their chances. You can’t judge this game just by the scoreline. There was some great end-to-end action. Both teams just couldn’t quite connect tonight.

  2. They’ve been playing poorly and just played very defensively to avoid big losses. Created nothing and very boring to watch too. That style seems to be paying off in MLS where teams can’t seem to be able to break down a defense.

Can’t imagine Lade and Ruthven staying in. Miller and Conde are much better. Barklage might keep being a part if the first team. Dax is still backup to Tainio. And then Marquez and Henry in for Ballouchy and Solli/Lindpere and the real first team is on the field. A team that can score a few.

  3. NYRB has won me back with their effort this year. They really lost me last year with all the Marquez antics, DeRo disaster, etc. I had very little confidence in this team when the year began, but I like the heart this team has shown under the early adversity. I don’t love Dax but the little guy definitely gives his all on the pitch, so I appreciate that. I always loved Lindpere and Agudelo. Juan is one of the most exciting players in MLS with the ball. The Henry prima donna act wears on me, but the guy is undeniably great and it is a privilege to watch him in action when he’s healthy. But Meara and the new guys have brought a level of effort, intensity and enthusiasm that has really been lacking the past couple years. Knowing that their backs are against the wall has forced the team to actually PLAY like a team for the first time in a long time. It is really a tough thing to be a fan of a bunch of underachieving guys who are only out for themselves, but this team I can get behind.

  4. @cl33069: Great Win by Red Bull! Ownership should take notice at what 8 American guys and no DP’s can do as they get their third straight shutout!
