SBI MLS Player of the Month: Chris Wondolowski

The San Jose Earthquakes are no longer a one-man show, but that hardly means that their go-to guy is not doing his part in the club's resurgence.

Chris Wondolowski's prolific season continued in April, as he scored four goals and had two assists in helping lead the Earthquakes to a 3-0-1 record in the month and a place atop the Western Conference standings to earn SBI MLS Player of the Month honors.

Wondolowski scored twice in a crucial win over Vancouver, snapping the Whitecaps' record 427-minute shutout streak to open the season in the process. He then tallied a goal and an assist as San Jose twice came back from one-goal deficits to tie New York, scored the game-icing goal in a victory over Real Salt Lake and helped set up the opening strike in the Earthquakes' 2-1 win in Philadelphia over the weekend.

Wondolowski, whose eight goals are second-most in MLS, edged out the New York Red Bulls' Thierry Henry, D.C. United's Maicon Santos and Chris Pontius, Real Salt Lake's Kyle Beckerman and Sporting Kansas City's Aurelien Collin for the monthly honors.

What did you think of Wondolowski's month? Think he deserves to be part of the national team for the upcoming friendlies and qualifiers? Which player do you think had the best month?

  1. Definitely deserves another look with the national team – no obvious 2nd forward behind Jozy. Would like to see Pontius get a look as well…

  2. He has scored more goals than any other player in the MLS since at least April 2010 and only seems to be getting better!

I’m not sure about player of the month things, for example, how do you compare a goal-scorer to a defender who kept his team in games?

But he certainly is a player who has been consistent at a very high level and his team is now strong enough to make his efforts pay off.

  3. Couldn’t have gone to a better person. I wish the national team would realize he can be great paired with another forward and not put in as the sole striker.

  4. Is the award subjective, statistically based, or both? I think Henry’s team is worse yet he had better numbers (at a glance, could be off here). Maybe team results count as well?

  5. He should be in the USMNT roster, but not if he’s going to be used as a lone CF. If they do that they’ll be taking a valuable player away from SJ for no reason.

I’d love to see him partnered with Jozy, Sapong, or Boyd.

  6. I’m a Wondo fan and apologist (e.g. I thought he’s looked good in his recent appearances, missed sitte aside).

That said, no “true target forward?”

Did you not see Jozy’s 2nd half against Italy? His hold up play and assist were about as good as can be expected of a target forward.

  7. CJ Sapong, Jozy Altidore, Andrew Wooten, Terrence Boyd….

Wondo definitely should be in the national team forward discussion, along with those other four guys plus Herculez Gomez and Juan Agudelo.

  8. Definitely deserves to be part of the national team but, as we’ve seen, Wondo does his best work partnered up top with a true target forward. Too bad we don’t have one of those in the USMNT.
