As far as stadium openers go, the Montreal Impact could not have asked for a much better spectacle.

The Impact opened the recently renovated Stade Saputo with a 4-1 romp of the Seattle Sounders in front of a crowd of 17,112 on Saturday night. Patrice Bernier led the way for the Impact with a three-assist performance.

Bernier's first assist came in the first half when Felipe scored the first MLS goal at Stade Saputo. Bernier then assisted on second-half goals from Justin Mapp and Andrew Wenger before the Sounders pulled one back through Eddie Johnson. Former Sounders forward Lamar Neagle capped the scoring three minutes before the end of regulation.

As if the result was not bad enough, the Sounders also lost defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado to a red card in the 58th minute.

Here are the match highlights:

What do you think of the Impact's 4-1 win over Seattle in the Stade Saputo MLS debut? Impressed by Bernier's outing? Think it was a successful opener?

  1. Sounders have not won in 5. Look for that to reach 7 or 8 soon. Poor FB play, one dimensional wing attack, and playing to the ref, will keep Sounders down by the middle of pack.

  2. Red that probably should/could have been a yellow, but holy cow, that was one of the most timid, porous back lines I’ve seen in a long time.

  3. Eh

Game was ruined before the red card. Huge Sounders fan but that was a pathetic performance by a team with few excuses.

It probably wasn’t a red but I honestly don’t think Sounders were going to come back. BTW, I suspect Rivas will get a retro red for his tackle on Montero

We are a beat up team with lots of missing parts and players trying to round into form on their way back from injuries. I get that…but there’s no excuse for lack of intensity or urgency no matter who’s playing. That had better change by Wednesday against KC

  4. From what I understand is the stadium seats 20k but only 17k tickets were sold because the stadium isn’t finished.

  5. I don’t understand how Montreal averaged over 30k at their games in the Olympic stadium so far this season yet they couldn’t sell out their opening game at their new 20k capacity stadium… WTF Montreal fans.
And they missed one hell of a game, too.
