It appears Juventus will not be making a trip to Washington D.C. this summer after all.

D.C. United announced Thursday that their July 28 friendly with Juventus that was part of the Herbalife World Football Challenge has been canceled. No specific reason was given, and the statement United released simply said they had received word that Juventus was not coming.

United added that discussions to fill that date with another "major European" team are already taking place, and that an announcement would come when all details are finalized.

Here are more notes from around the league:

MANSALLY JOINS REAL SALT LAKE

Hours before Real Salt Lake suffered a crushing defeat to the Los Anges Galaxy, the Western Conference leaders announced the acquisition of Kenny Mansally. The 23-year-old Gambian international joins Real Salt Lake after spending much of the last six seasons with the New England Revolution, where he played in 89 regular season matches. The versatile Mansally has seven goals and five assists in those matches and will bolster RSL's depth at forward and midfield.

BARROS SCHELOTTO APPOINTED HEAD COACH OF LANUS

Former Columbus Crew player and MLS MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto has been named the new head coach of Argentine club Lanus. Barros Schelotto will take over for next season after Lanus suffered a disappointing and inconsistent campaign. The job will be Barros Schelotto's first head coaching gig since retiring from playing in 2011.

BRIDGEVIEW RESIDENTS UPSET WITH EXPENSIVE TOYOTA PARK

Soccer supporters in Bridgeview, Ill. may love Toyota Park, but not everyone there shares those feelings. Bridgeview residents expressed their anger over the stadium's financial struggles during a meeting on Wednesday, stating they wanted to know how Toyota Park's reported unpaid debt would be paid off. According to a report, much of the city's debt right now comes from Toyota Park.

Who would you like to see United replace Juventus with? Think Mansally will make an impact with RSL? How do you see Barros Schelotto doing as a head coach?

  1. Another player rejected by DC winds up with a different MLS club — Mansally is the second this week. Mansally joins Zayner, who joined Brettschneider and Barklage, who’ve been nice additions to their club. I’m not judging DC, especially since it’s not clear what their cap room is, but it is curious.

  2. Houston is a model of a good stadium development. I believe most sss’ are mostly privatly funded. Unlike everyother stadium in the country for mlb, nfl, etc

  3. I thought RBA was fully funded by Red Bull. Wasn’t Harrison just upset about the amount of taxes they are/aren’t recieving?

  4. Taxpayer funded stadiums just aren’t sustainable. Look at PPL Park, Red Bull Arena, and now Toyota Park. Each of these stadiums has caused tension in its respective community. Ideally, as soccer’s popularity grows in America, more private investors will foot the bill of stadium development. Until then, municipalities are taking a big risk.
