Red Bulls vs. D.C. United: Match Night Commentary

The New York Red Bulls will put their unbeaten home record on the line tonight as they take on arch-rival D.C. United at Red Bull Arena in a match that could see them catch D.C. for first place in the East.

D.C. United is leading the Eastern Conference on the strength of a four-match winning streak, but their 1-0 victory against Philadelphia showed a team that may have had some rust coming off the long MLS break.

The Red Bulls have hit a slump of their own, going three straight matches without a victory, but the return of Thierry Henry today should provide a huge boost for an offense that has struggled in recent weeks.

SBI will be providing live commentary on today's match so please feel free to follow along here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

  1. You clearly did not pay attention to some of the excellent saves he made in that game. The backline did not help him much at all on the goals, and he was pressured heavily in the first half.

  2. Terrific move for the Red Bull 3rd goal, from Marquez taking the ball out of his half, to Ballouchy pass, Lindpere cross and Soli’s finish. Impressive stuff.

  3. Yeah Martino has also been quality, but I think he is the only American announcer thus far that can articulate the intricacies of the game. This makes sense bc none of us grew up with coaches who were teaching details or announcers who could actually analyze the game. We have a long ways to go in this regard.

  4. if US announcer would learn to shut up and only commentate, then we would have more… but no, they go on and on and try break down EVERYTHING… they also havent a vocabulary to save their lives…

  5. Just stunning play from the Red Bulls in the first half. Marquez or Pearce at fault (Marquez probably) for the first goal, but it just shows how having two centerbacks willing to pass the ball out instead of lumping it helps a team keep possession.

Brilliant sequences of one touch passes in the first half, really smart switching of play too. I’d find it really hard to criticize much about the first half.

And two brilliant goals from Barklage, goals that you’d expect from Henry.

  6. I’m with you Don. I think we should have more US announcers on MLS broadcasts, but that tales nothing away from Arlo. He and Martino are a great combination

  7. Maybe those condemned building-dwellers from the District will actually get the ball in the NY half apart from the first 30 seconds in the 2nd half.

  8. What? After so many painful years of listening to Harkes, Twellman, Balboa, etc., he is my favorite and IMHO only second to Ian Darke.
