Vancouver Whitecaps and U.S. youth national team forward Omar Salgado will miss the next 2-to-3 months after breaking his foot, sources told Fox Soccer on Thursday.

Salgado suffered the injury while on international duty with the U.S. Under-20 men's national team, which is currently in South America for matches against Uruguay and Chile. Salgado was an injury replacement on the roster for Real Salt Lake's Luis Gil, and he played in the United States' 4-2 loss to Uruguay on Wednesday before being taken off in the 82nd minute for FC Dallas forward Jonathan Top.

The injury comes at a bad time for Salgado, who was just starting to come into his own and earn consistent minutes on the left wing for the Whitecaps after a spell of inactivity. In six league games (five starts) Salgado, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, accounted for one assist.

  1. #1 pick curse, Mo Edu is about the only one in recent memory who hasn’t been hit by it. Zakuani was about the only real non-bust in the last 5 years and look what happened to him. Maybe this is MLS’s version of the Madden curse

  2. This must be the dreaded 5th metatarsal injury. Those suck, as I’ve dealt with it myself. He’s young though, I’m sure he’ll heal quickly and be back contributing by October 1.

  3. Selgado better go work out his upper body for 3 months straight. Put some muscle on you while your foot is heeling !!!

  4. he was just starting to prove his worth, before going on the U20 trip. If you recall, he had via issues his first year, and the team has a glut of forwards. As a raw kid, he’s developing a bit slower than most would like, but he’s certainly getting there. Tough break for the kid

  5. That sucks for Salgado.

I really do hope Tab Ramos gets this team playing well before the CONCACAF qualifying tournament. There are some very promising U-18’s he should be looking to bring into this squad like: Russel Canouse, Nicholas Gaitan, Andrew Oliver, Mobi Fehr and Alex Guido. Not to mention Marc Pelosi, Anthony Brooks, Jerome Keisewetter and a few talented Americans at PSG’s academy. I think this team will be a talented one when Ramos has all of his pieces identified.

They still play Uruguay one more time and Chile on this South American trip in Ramos’ first competitive games. Good luck to the team.
