Toronto FC thrashes Montreal

For two straight games, Toronto FC watched two-goal leads disappear and saw key points be dropped by a shoddy defense that has plagued them all season.

TFC flipped the script on Wednesday night, and instead of blowing a two-goal lead, they found a third goal and ran away with a 3-0 thrashing of the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo.

Torsten Frings, Ryan Johnson and Danny Koevermans all provided goals for Toronto, which recorded just their second win of the season as the beleaguered TFC defense posted a rare shutout.

With the match scoreless at halftime, Toronto took control when Frings powered a free kick past Montreal goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts to open the scoring. Johnson tallied his own finish off a Nick Soolsma assist in the 72nd minute, while Koevermans delivered the final dagger just six minutes later.

The loss was Montreal’s first at their new home, Stade Saputo, a defeat that keeps the Impact outside of the top five in the Eastern Conference.
