If Terrence Boyd was hoping to enjoy a solid performance in his professional debut at the club level, he did just that. And then some.

Boyd delivered a Man of the Match-worthy performance in Rapid Vienna's season-opening 4-0 victory over Wacker Innsbruck on Saturday, scoring twice and setting up another goal in the rout. The performance came in Boyd's first official match with the Austrian team and is just the latest accomplishment in a summer that saw the 21-year-old striker transfer clubs and earn his first start for the U.S. men's national team.

Boyd started in the match and he did not have to wait long for his first professional goal, as he netted the winner four minutes in. He then assisted on Viena's third goal before closing out the scoring in the second half.

You can watch the goals and assist here.

What do you think of Boyd's performance? Expecting him to have a breakout season with Rapid Vienna?

  1. I’m hoping for one season, I expect him to destroy that league. ALthough 2 season’s does make since. I hop Juan and Boyd dev.into something. I will just sit and wait.

  2. What has Agudelo done for the US that was “worth a crap”?

His goals were scored in his first few ganes for the US during exhibtions. He has looked not so good since those first few games. And his club career has been nothing to write home about. Does that remind you of EJ yet?

Wondo is far more consistent, and produces at the club level. They are both in MLS and Wondo greatly out produces Juan. So by that comparison, Juan is nowhere near Wondo’s class.

And if you go by how JK looks at it, he has called up Wondo a lot more than he has Juan recently.

If Juan doesn’t watch out he is going mirror Teal Bunbury’s recent career arc i.e. heading downhill.

  3. May be a blessing in disguise…now he wont be missing time from his club team and can get established. He would have missed this game.

  4. Until Wondo does something worth a crap in a USMNT kit he does not belong on that list. All four of the others have had better displays, including Agudelo.

  5. I agree that Wondo’s scoring record the last year means he is deserving of being on the list, but I don’t think you can make the statement that MLS is better than Austria simply because one or two players struggle to adapt.

Not to say MLS is or isn’t, but it’s common for players, regardless of age/pedigree to struggle to adapt to a new league.

  6. Wondo definitely belongs on that list. He just needs the correct supporting cast. He is not a target forward. Maybe ironically, him and Boyd would probably work pretty well together.

  7. Wondolowski, does belong on that list, he is on a scoring run. One can argue after watching the leader scorer from Austria come over to DC and struggle, That MLS is better.

  8. Damn good day for Americans.

Boyd was beast, Gatt scored, Gomez scored.

Any update on Gatt getting taken out with an injury? He walked off under his own power but didnt return.

  9. Not a bandwagon jumper, have liked the kids potential since his Hertha days but he remains rough around the edges. Great first 2 games thus far but lets wait and see before we coronate him king of all forward prospects.

Having said that, if he can add refinement to his game, he will be a huge factor next cycle and possibly even this one. I love his strength and even his “bull in the china shop” approach.

I predict 2 strong years in Austria followed by a return to Germany, where he will be a bundesliga starter for a good club at age 23.

  10. It makes it even suckier for Bunbury, who in the long run would probably had a much better national team career had he gone with canada

  11. Not sure about this but from what I recall Boyd didn’t have a long time left on his contract. So a loan could have ran out the contract and he would have been available on a free transfer.

  12. there seems to be a healthy respect between Jozy and Boyd, I think Boyd’s success will make Jozy work harder and be an even better player this season. Let’s see what Jozzy has in store for his first season game.

  13. Really excited for the battle over starting forward role. As of right now I do believe that jozy has better touch and is better overall, but boyd is hungy, physical, and has great instincts.

  14. Thanks for the link. A lot to like — good finishing, nice pass to an open teammate, and a great celebration after his second goal.

  15. Exactly, he seems very capable at this level, keep it up and he will be at the next soon enough. The one thing that did make me pause was the sheer athleticism of Boyd. It almost seems as if he is still gaining full control of his body, which is impressive because he is big and moves incredibly well already.

  16. Good stuff. If he’s dominating even against teams of a lower caliber that’s still very impressive considering his age. Starting out in the Prem or La Liga isn’t always the best path for everybody. Don’t want to get too carried away but I’m starting to get really excited about this kid.

  17. Watched the game, and yes the Austrian league isn’t great, but Boyd bossed the game. And the easy pass to the teammate for the goal when he could have probably shot and scored just portends good things.

  18. on the link below if you scroll down the story and click the third photo a great scene of Boyd celebrating his first goal 4 minutes into the season of his first game and the fans going crazy. gotta love it. I am wondering why Jurgen Klopp, who is a great judge of young talent, let Terrence Boyd leave, unless, of course, Dortmund has buyback rights on Boyd. That is really the only explanation I can come up with.

  20. SBI, this is why you guys are on my favorites bar. Keep the great info coming!

I didn’t see the game and have only seen Boyd with the MNT, but that guy looks to have some serious potential. Great to see him get off to a good start in Austria.
