Must-See Goal: Terrence Boyd

Yes, it's only preseason, but U.S. national team forward Terrence Boyd's bicycle kick goal off a rebound in Rapid Vienna's friendly against Michael Bradley's AS Roma Tuesday afternoon was a thing of beauty. Not a bad way to make a good impression while hoping to earn a regular place in his new team's starting lineup. Bradley's Roma won 2-1, with Bradley playing the first half, and Boyd being subbed out after 58 minutes. Enjoy the strike:

  1. Boyd is almost as old as Altidore. We do get that right? Altidore scored against Mexico at 18, Spain as a 19 year old, worked England in the World Cup at 20.

Boyd is 21, has 4 caps 0 goals. Altidore is 22, 49 caps 13 goals. Scored in WCQ, Gold Cup, Confed Cup, and hand in game tying slovenia goal and Algeria winning goal. So please, let’s just wait before we put Boyd above Altidore.

  2. No…I can promise you Bradley is not stoked. He’ll be hearing about that forever and I’d be surprised if he didn’t slash Boyd’s tires in the parking lot.

  3. Jozy has not shown hint of class touch against any team other than Italy or T&T. As we all know Italy is notoriously low pressure defense, and T&T is a marginal CONCACAF side. Most games I see him in he still fumbles around, because they play high pressure, they try to deny him the ball, they don’t let him have time to settle. Not sold.

  4. Fair point except Altidore remains a similar work in progress (or are we just forgetting who actually ran out at forward for the qualifiers?) and Boyd is already appearing with senior club and country teams and scoring goals like this. He also had goals in the U23 tournament which suggest (a) he can turn at least some potential to production and (b) that among those with potential he has particular promise to fulfill it.

Simply put, I already see signs of finishing touch Altidore lacks. Jozy is a strong player capable of, say, taking advantage of the bend but don’t break approach of the Italians, whom he has done well against. Or the weaker teams in CONCACAF. But if you look at his major CONCACAF and World Cup record, it’s modest. People see promise in the AZ form but then he shows up unprepared and unfit for the qualifiers. I’m not sold he’s going to score in real, tight international games against teams better than T&T, or that he’s a 90 minute guy in any circumstance.

  5. kid is starting out in the right foot. I hope he can keep it up. Boyd just plays with such a pasion, I wish him well this upcoming season.

  6. oh my gaaawd. aaawsome. bicycle, indeed more impressive then the next one that scored. the kid is fired up already for a pre-season friendly and is moving around the field like he owns the place and that nobody better get in his way. don’t wanna jinx him, but, ladies and gentleman, i think we have just seen the future of rock’n’roll–oops, i mean the future star striker of the USMNT in WC2014…

  7. I think Bradley kind of throw a cheap shot in a good faith at Boyd when he pass by Bradley that what I think. 🙂 lol, but is nice to see our guys going at each other on a game either is a friendly or competition.

  8. Disagree – Boyd is not precision. He’s a charging bull. He has some excellent skills and creativity as he shows here but he’s also woefully deficient in some areas, notably his touch which is pretty much nonexistent. The good news, as Jozy and Deuce have shown, is that touch can be improved. It doesn’t have to be learned at 12 years old or anything. Jozy has a much more complete package of skills right now. TB is not ready yet but the future is bright if he keeps working.

  9. Wow! If he keeps scoring these types of goals, Jozy will soon find himself 3rd on the USMNT depth chart (if he isn’t already there).

Also, it was great to see MB tracking back … always hustling!

  10. Sick goal. Bright future!

Good to see two Americans starting for their new respective clubs!

I predict that Boyd will be one of the most sought after strikers after the 2014 WC.

  11. Like I said on the other thread, this is why Boyd is a better prospect long term than Altidore, more of a precision instrument. Really, we can use them both…

  12. Can I just say how nice it is hear about a game in Europe and you have a big Italian team like Roma…and another big club in Austria…and they both have a Yank from the USMNT.

I dont need there to be any highlight or bicycle…just “One of the best clubs in Italy and one of the best clubs in Austria play each other for a pre-season match….two members of the USMNT played in attacking positions, one on each team.”

    …color me happy…

  13. So how long before Boyd to Roma talk starts?

Between making an impression with his bikes and the American owners….

  14. I was watching this match – the sequence before this shot was the following – rapid player crosses the ball from the wing and Boyd bicycles the cross off the bar, the rebound comes out to his teammate (where this replay starts) and he shoots which the gk saves and Boyd bicycles again for the goal….amazing athleticism to get up for bicycles like that so quickly and both on target! Hopefully someone can find the full sequence to post online.

  15. LOL. Anyone notice him bump into Michael Bradley as he’s running to go celebrate? Bradley is wearing the #4 jersey.
