NASL: Midweek Rewind

If Eric Wynalda learned one thing in his debut with the Atlanta Silverbacks, it is that he has some work to do.

The Carolina RailHawks spoiled Wynalda's debut game in charge of the Silverbacks, as they picked up a 2-1 victory at WakeMed Park in North Carolina on Tuesday. The Silverbacks got off to a bad start in the game, falling behind just four minutes in. But they found an equalizer not long after.

Unfortunately for Wynalada and Atlanta, that was as close as they got to picking up a result in a match that was delayed twice because of lightning. Carolina scored again in the second half courtesy of Nick Zimmermand's second finish of the day, and it was a lead the RailHawks did not relinquish.

Here are the other results from the midweek games in NASL:

The Tampa Bay Rowdies gave their largest crowd in two years at Al Lang Stadium a real treat on Wednesday, defeating inner-state rivals the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, 3-1. The win was the fourth straight victory for Tampa Bay, giving the club its longest winning streak since its return in 2010. Mike Ambersley, Daniel Antoniuk and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake all scored for the Rowdies in front of a crowd of 4,710.

The Puerto Rico Islanders' quest for first place in the league took a blow on Wednesday night, as they suffered a 4-0 mauling to Minnesota Stars FC. The Stars' on-the-field fireworks in the July 4 game were led by a brace from Martin Nunez, who netted the winner 17 minutes in. The other two goals scored at NSC Stadium came from Simone Bracalello and Amani Walker.

It took a second half goal, but the San Antonio Scorpions build on their first-place standing in NASL with a 1-0 triumph over FC Edmonton at Heroes Stadium on Wednesday night. Esteban Bayona scored in the 66th minute to break the deadlock, and the Eddies were unable to respond in the match that gave San Antonio a four-point cushion atop the standings.

What do you think of the Silverbacks losing in Wynalda's first game in charge of the club? Impressed with the Rowdies' winning streak? Surprised by the Stars' thrashing of the Islanders?

  1. Was at the game and ended up talking with Eric Wynalda for a while during one of the rain delays. He seems like a good guy to take the time to talk to me (just a fan at the game). I wish him all the best and hope he gets the Silverbacks back on the right track.

  2. Took the words right out of my mouth (or at least echoed what I’ve said for a long time).

How that guy was paid for commentary is beyond me.

He played a major role in bombing Fox Football Fone and was the reason I stopped watching it DVRing it.

However, in terms of managing? Maybe that’s his thing.
