Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

It was a goal-filled weekend for the Americans Abroad contingent, as four different players found the back of the net on the biggest scoring output of the early European season.

Clarence Goodson was among the players to tally, netting his first goal of the season in Brondby IF's 1-1 draw with FC Copenhagen on Saturday. Goodson's finish came in the waning moments of the match when he raced onto a cross and headed it home, and it helped Brondby avoid a fifth defeat in its first six games of the season.

Another defender who scored was Michael Parkhurst. The U.S. men's national team fullback hit the winner in FC Nordsjaelland's 1-0 triumph over AGF Aarhus on Sunday, giving him decisive goals in each of Nordsjaelland's last two games. The goal was his second of the season.

Jozy Altidore and Alejandro Bedoya were the other two players to score for their respective clubs. Altidore netted his second consecutive brace for AZ Alkmaar in their 3-1 win against Heracles, while Bedoya buried a bicycle kick in his debut for Helsingborgs IF, a 2-1 defeat to Elfsborg.

What do you think of these performances? Impressed that four players combined for five goals this early into the season? Surprised that two defenders in Goodson and Parkhurst netted?

Share your thoughts below.

  1. Fulham are hoping the price will be driven up by desperation as the window nears closing. That means we can look forward to these kinds of media spats for the next week-plus.

I refuse to believe Clint has taken himself out of the club. He’d be there with the rest of his guys unless specifically instructed not to be.

This is a strategem. Fulham don’t care how it makes Clint look or what effect it has on his career as it moves forward, all they care about is getting the most they can for him. They feel the way to do that is to keep him on the market and hope a bidding war starts in the eleventh hour.

I believe Fulham has categorically rejected all offers for him and told teams that their asking price was well over market value. I don’t believe for one second that a player who scores 23 goals in England splitting time as a forward and as a midfielder doesn’t draw any offers (which is what Fulham are claiming).

  2. The most depressing thing Jol has said was that he wished the transfer window ended when the games began. Are Fulham really going to screw Dempsey?

  3. A couple of things. First – What is the time table for Holden coming back?

Second – I am a huge Clint fan, but it seems like he has handled this situation all wrong. He should have been training and playing, while behind closed doors he could be demanding a transfer. Why doesn’t he hand in a transfer request? After this weekend I am sure Liverpool is looking for some help.

  4. Will Guzan retire on the bench? Has anyone seen Will Packwood play? How is his skill and passing? I read he’s 6’3. We can definately use defenders that height.

  5. Anderlecht has a new coach, and it seems like he doesn’t rate Sacha much. Gatt is still recovering from a small injury or strain. Don’t know about Boyd, but he’s young and has never played a full season of top level soccer. Hopefully his coaches are just easing him in!

  6. Great to see Spector and Packwood getting minutes for Birmingham. Specs has been out since about March and just making his way back – replaced Packwood at right back. Lots of right backs getting time in Europe even if Lichaj isn’t getting time.

  7. He’s excellent in 3 Bundesliga but pretty much a sub in 2 Bundesliga but you never know. Glad he’s scoring though.

Hat trick against a big Bundesliga club must do wonders for self-esteem

  8. Clarence Goodson is always handy to score a goal due to his 6’4 height. But his team Brondby has been crap for the past year. What’s up with that?

  9. My favorite part of Jozy’s second goal is after he scores the camera cuts to the manager doing a fist pump, then it cuts back to Jozy doing the exact same fist pump. I’m pretty sure this needs to be analyzed in detail.

  10. BTW: Bradely scored 2-0 in the 3-0 Rome’s friendly victory vs Tessaloniki Sunday night.
The boy is growing well ;o)
Good chance for him if Danielino would join ManCity.

Nnaah no way. Daniele is going to stay… I hope…

  11. Amazing performance by Matt Taylor against a decent 1. Bundesliga team. Too bad he is playing for a Third League team (SC Preussen Münster). Maybe the hat-trick will catch the attention of a second league team before the transfer deadline ends August 31. Here is a link to a photo of Taylor celebrating one of the goals.

  12. I don’t understand, A in A. Why would Clint want now to stay and play under a jerk of a coach who has spent the last few days with the support of club management viciously attacking Clint and trying to destroy his reputation? A player should be able to decline to sign a contract extension in order to move to a new team without being publicly slaughtered, don’t you think? I, for one, will never be able to support Fulham again. Unforgivable what they have done to Clint. I would imagine that Martin “Darth Vader” Jol’s bullying antics have forever burned the bridge between Fulham and Dempsey.

Now it is only a question of whether Fulham let’s him go by August 31 and collects a 5-10 million transfer fee or keeps him until his contract expires in June, meaning Dempsey will sign a pre-contract in January as a free agent and Fulham will not get one single cent for him. In January Clint might not be able to sign with a Champions League team, but there will be several decent teams (including, possibly, Everton) lining up for his services.

If I had to bet on the outcome, I would say Fulham will not pass up the money, but — nice guys that they are — will make Clint suffer as long as possible before agreeing to a transfer about five minutes before midnight on August 31.

  13. There is pretty much no way Delaney is playing for the US. His preference is Denmark. If he is never good enough to even be cap tied as a fringe player for Denmark, then he would also never be good enough to be called in by the US. So then the only hope is some sort of rift, and that is unlikely.

  14. WoW, seems like 95% of our players didnt play

I watched the FC Copenhangen and turned if off right before Goodson scored….

I was more interested to see if our potential dual national player “Thomas Delaney” was back from injury. I hope we can get him to play for the US

  15. That may be true but Clint hasn’t had full training in a while (he at the least missed a chunk of preseason) so he’s likely not fully game-fit anyways. Besides, after the offensive showing Fulham just had, I don’t think Jol is just going to throw him back into the starting XI for a bit if he isn’t transferred and I also doubt Clint will be placed into the starting XI of whatever team he goes to right away. More than likely, he’s going to be coming off the bench for a couple weeks once this issue is resolved.

  16. Lots of did not dress and did not plays. I’m too lazy to look up which leagues are still in preseason and regional tournaments, but it does seem like a lot of did not plays.

  17. As a Fulham fan.. I hope Clint sees it in his heart to just that though…. Fulham could be something special this season with Clint, so unless Arsenal comes knocking he should stay… aside from being a bigger club and perhaps more weekly wages, Liverpool is a lateral move to a team that I think will turn out to be a train wreck all year long…

  18. Guess everyone else has to pick up the yanks-abroad scoring slack since Clint probably won’t be scoring any goals for a while.

  19. Jol is the bitter ex spreading false malicious rumors on Facebook, and then a week later breaking down and pleading “I’m sorry I lied please baby will you give me one more chance?”

  20. Michael Bradley started for AS Roma, played 90 minutes, and scored a GOAL (bold) in their 3-0 victory in their final preseason game.

  21. Meanwhile Fulham supporters have become the guy that had his incredibly hot girl cheat on him then when the relationship was over refuses to admit that she was actually hot…
