Mid-Day Ticker: Aguero injured, Pepe cleared to leave hospital, and more

Manchester City may have dodged a bullet by coming from behind to beat Southampton this past weekend, but they have suffered a scare due to the injury to Sergio Aguero.

The Argentine striker had to be taken off on a stretcher in the early moments of Manchester City's 3-2 win on Sunday, and now the club is anxiously awaiting to hear the results from scans taken on his right knee. Aguero tweeted after the match that the injury was not severe, but that may not be the case and head coach Roberto Mancini has expressed some concern over the knock.

Aguero scored 30 times in his debut season for City last year, so a replacement will likely need to be added by the reigning Premiership champions if he is ruled out for any substantial amount of time.

Here are more stories from Monday:

Pepe's status for Real Madrid's Supercopa first leg against Barcelona on Thursday is still up in the air, but he was cleared to leave a local hospital on Monday after spending the night due to a collision he had with goalkeeper Iker Casillas on Sunday. Pepe crashed into Casillas during the first half of Real Madrid's season-opening 1-1 draw with Valencia and the Real Madrid defender suffered a head injury that forced him to be replaced at halftime before he was taken to a nearby hospital. According to Real Madrid, Pepe was deemed fine after observation from doctors.

The FA has wasted no time in taking action against Alan Pardew. The Newcastle United manager has been charged by the FA for shoving a match official in his club's 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Pardew pushed an assistant referee after he failed to give Newcastle a throw-in, and now he has until August 23 to respond to the charge.

There may have been speculation as to where Martin Skrtel's future lied, but he put them to rest by signing a contract extension with Liverpool on Monday. The 27-year-old Skrtel signed a 'long-term' contract with the Reds that comes during a summer in which he was linked with a move to clubs such as Manchester City and Fiorentina. Liverpool did not release any specific details about the Slovakian international's new deal.

Concerned by Aguero's injury? Surprised Pepe was released from hopsital so soon given the collision with Casillas? How severe should Pardew's punishment be?

  1. Dempsey may in fact not be as good as Aguero but if Aguero is out, I’ll bet Clint would be a far cheaper replacement than an equivalent player ( and who would that be?) never mind that this late in the transfer window, there are not a lot of options.

I’ll bet Mancini would not be upset if Clint were the backup plan for Aguero.

  2. MLS is more or less the current gold standard with head injuries/trauma in the world of soccer.

I’m pretty sure Taylor Twellman had a lot to do with that.

The neurosurgeons I work with love it.

  3. I was surprised at the number of head injuries during the Real Madrid game. Casillas probably didn’t know where he was during the final minutes of the first half.

Ives, have the EPL or La Liga or continental federations said or done much about concussions? Seems like they have been a major story here in the US in the last couple of years, especially with the NFL.
