Remembering Kirk Urso

It has been less than two days since the death of Columbus Crew midfielder Kirk Urso at the age of 22 and the American soccer community is still coming to grips with the passing of a young player who garnered so much respect and admiration in a relatively short amount of time.

The recurring themes that emerge from people discussing Urso was his friendly and happy personality off the field and his determination and work ethic on the field. He was a player who made the most of everything he was given, and worked tirelessly to keep improving.

The former Chicago Sockers, U.S. Under-17 National Team player and former University of North Carolina standout played with many of the best young American players of his generation, developing an impressive number of ties to players who today remember a player who was easy to like and admire.

Here is my FOX Soccer piece on Urso's passing, with comments from childhood friend and Real Salt Lake midfielder Will Johnson and Philadelphia Union head coach, and Urso's former U.S. Under-17 national team coach, John Hackworth.

Here is a good summary of Twitter comments from friends and former teammates and other people in the soccer community.

As the soccer community continues to mourn, please feel free to share your own thoughts on Urso in the comments section below.

  1. I will be curious to know what the cause of death was exactly. I consider soccer to be one of the healthiest sports there is but it’s a bit disturbing how many top players seem to be dying from heart-related problems.

  2. That info has not been reported/released yet. He was pronounced dead at a Columbus, OH hospital early Sunday morning. One report said police were called to an address around midnight, another report also said that address was a bar, but nothing from an official source.

  3. Maybe I have missed it but Ive seen no info about where this young man was when he died or what he has passed from ? Anybody have that info? I would appreciate it.
