SBI MLS Team of the Week: Philadelphia Union

The Philadelphia Union may not be going to the playoffs this year, but they are finishing the season on a strong note that bodes well for 2013.

The Union posted a pair of victories last week, including an impressive road victory against the Chicago Fire, to earn SBI MLS Team of the Week honors.

Philadelphia stunned the Fire last Wednesday, handing the second-place team in the East their first home loss against an Eastern Conference opponent since 2010, then the defense stepped up and posted the club's first shutout in five matches in beating New England.

The Union beat out the Seattle Sounders, Real Salt Lake and San Jose Earthquakes for this week's honor.

What did you think of the Union's performances last week? Which MLS team impressed you the most?

  1. Philly should absolutely keep Adu! He’s a major asset to their offense. They need to add players savvy enough to play with him. They should build offense around him and Jack

  2. Definitely one of the things that keeps me calling back to the team, even through a rough season. Seeing Marfan, Adu and Okugo on the same field is something I would love to see transition from Blue and Gold to Red White and Blue in the near future.

  3. For me, the young tallent is what draws me to Philly. Macmath, Jack Mac, Adu…they are investing in the players we are hoping to build into first-choice starters for the USMNT. I don’t know if playing together helps or hurts, or has no impact on their development, but at least they are playing in a first division league. The only other players I can think of that are trying to build as national-team players are Gil, Shea, Agudelo and they are all just 1-prospect to a team. Philly is heavily invested in US MNT’s future, which to me is a strong selling point.

  4. Philly needs a forward and a goalie so, so badly. Considering (a) that there’ll definitely be post-season roster turnover and (b) it’d be a wildly popular move with fans, the Union should try to bring back Le Toux. I don’t know if he’s exactly the best fit w/Hackworth’s system, but he’d do.

I was joking with my dad the other day and said the Carlton Cole would be good, but the more we talked about it, I actually think he’d be a great fit (though prolly a bit $$$, no?).

Also I’d like to ship out of town a host of players: Lopez, Martinez, Carroll (I like him, but let Okugo start) and Adu.

Knowing that Philly won’t spend big, who should they be targeting this offseason? And who should they be getting rid of?

  5. I was at the game on Saturday and while it was an adequate performsnce, to say the team beats out sides fighting for playoff spots is a little generous.

To me the bigger question is do we see Adu in blue and gold next season, the side seems determined to form an identity without him, even with the injury he’s coming back from.
