UEFA Champions League: Match Day Two (Your Running Commentary)

UEFA Champions League logo

The action in the UEFA Champions League Group of Death, Group D, swings back into full gear later today and all four teams will be eager to pick up points so as to not fall behind in the race for the top two spots.

Manchester City are in dire need of grabbing three points after failing to put away Real Madrid in the group opener, but they will have to knock off reigning German Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund in order to do so. City will have an edge as they are playing at home, but the pressure for them to win will build with every minute considering Dortmund already has three points after beat Ajax in the first round.

Ajax will also be looking to pick up a win today, as they host Real Madrid in a match that should be wide open from the start. The Dutch club was shutout in their group-opening loss to Borussia Dortmund, so finding the back of the net will be vital for them to gain some confidence against one of the most expensive teams in the world.

  1. I feel the same way watching Freddy Adu play. Carzola has been the best AM in the EPL for real. His passing on the edge of the 18 is just nasty.

  2. That’s what I assumed you meant – wanted to make sure. I tell you, if Giourd had his scoring touch, he’d be leading the league in goals. Carzola keeps dropping incredible balls for him…

  3. Meant to post that here:

I’ll go first. He strikes me as more lively, more committed, less selfish and his short range passing is eye popping. So I second my own proposition.

  5. Ajax played valiantly in the first half. They’re need a strong central midfielder that doesn’t give up the ball so easily. They need to find a couple of Davids or Seedorfs… The scoreline contradicts the fact the goalkeeper Vermeer kept them in the game. Sana disappointed in this game. Oh well, 4 more games to go. Back to the drawing board.

  6. PK equalizer late for City. Tough one for Dortmund to accept I’m sure that handball but I’ve seen it called like that plenty…and not called too.

fun second half to watch with no horse in the game

  7. And he just gave away a penalty in extra time to allow Man City to tie the game – that is a bit of American soccer luck whether he plays for the USMNT or not.

  8. My comment about Jones was a pure attempt to be hunorous- as was my response to you below about Subotic.

Jones is a part of our USMNT set up and should be for the foreseeable future. I thought I would try to set off the panickers.

  9. Is Jones on a red card suspension or yellow card accumulation or something? Usually he is playing. I like him because he is not afraid to be mean to the other team but I also dislike him sometimes too. I would rather Williams starts for the national team.

  10. what a miss from Lewandowski…who played him in? beautiful ball thru and he should have done better. City lucky still just 0-1 76th minute

  11. time for an outrageous opinion:

Jones can’t even get on the bench for his team. he shouldn’t be playing for the USMNT
