The Chicago Fire went into Wednesday night's match against the Philadelphia Union expected to rebound from last week's loss to Sporting Kansas City.
The Philadelphia Union had other plans.
Jack McInerney recorded a goal and assist as the Union pounced on a flat Fire squad on their way to a 3-1 victory at Toyota Park. The result snapped Chicago's six-match winning streak at home and left them five points behind Sporting Kansas City for first place in the East with three matches remaining.
McInerney opened the scoring when he slipped in behind the Fire defense and latched onto a clever pass from Danny Cruz before beating Sean Johnson in the seventh minute to make the score 1-0. McInerney helped make it 2-0 in the 67th minute when he set up Gabriel Gomez for a long-distance blast.
Chicago responded just two minutes later when Dominic Oduro made it 2-1, but the Fire were unable to get any closer before Antoine Hoppenot came off the bench to provide an insurance goal for the visiting Union.
