Whitecaps roll past hapless Chivas USA, extend lead on FC Dallas for playoff spot

The Vancouver Whitecaps were in desperate need of a victory on Wednesday night after enduring a seven-match winless streak, and after watching a once-mighty hold on a playoff spot dwindle down to two points.

Luckily for them, Major League Soccer's cure for the common slump, Chivas USA, came to town.

Camilo Sanvezzo atoned for his awful miss in last weekend's draw against the Seattle Sounders by scoring a goal and setting up two more as the Whitecaps rolled to a 4-0 mauling of Chivas USA at BC Place.

Gershon Koffie opened the scoring in the 11th minute, and the Whitecaps just kept on rolling as Dane Richards, Camilo and Kenny Miller all deposited shots past beleaguered Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

The victory opened up a five-point cushion between Vancouver and FC Dallas for the final playoff spot in the West, though FC Dallas has a game in hand and has two of three remaining matches against Chivas USA. The Goats are winless in their past 11 matches, and have suffered five straight shutout defeats.

Vancouver's victory also eliminated Chivas USA, Portland and the Colorado Rapids from playoff contention.

Here are the match highlights:
