American Abroad: Weekend Rewind

By FRANCO PANIZO

There were a handful of Americans who made an impact this weekend by scoring goals or delivering assist, but that was not the only bit of good news.

Oguchi Onyewu made his first La Liga appearance for Malaga on Saturday, starting and going the distance in the center of their defense. Unfortunately for Onyewu and Malaga, they suffered a 2-1 loss to Real Sociedad. Still, Onyewu starting could be a sign of him returning to form and being on the brink of breaking into the starting lineup on a more permanent basis.

Josht Gatt saw only 45 minutes of action on Sunday, but he and Molde FK were crowned Eliteserien champions for the second consecutive season. Gatt and Molde defeated Honefoss BK, 1-0, and second-place Stromsgodset suffered a surprise loss to Sandnes Ulf, which clinched the league title for Molde with one round of games still to play.

Tim Howard and Everton also enjoyed a good result, as they defeated Sunderland, 2-1, on Saturday to continue their strong start to the Premiership campaign. Howard made two saves in the victory that kept the Toffees in a top four spot in the league standings.
