Monday Kickoff: Lampard in talks with Chinese club, Ronaldo out, and more

Frank Lampard could soon follow in the footsteps of former teammates Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, as he is flirting with the possibility of joining a Chinese club in the near future.

Chinese club Guizhou Renhe confirmed Monday they were in talks with the England international over a possible deal that could see him join the Chinese Super League in January. Lampard has been linked with a move to China since March, but this is the first time an actual club has spoken out about acquiring him.

The 34-year-old Lampard has been with Chelsea since 2001, and he has played in nearly 400 league games during that span while scoring 129 goals. Lampard had been rumored to be interested in MLS earlier this year when he stopped by to watch the Los Angeles Galaxy play.

Here are more stories from around the world of soccer:

RONALDO RULED OUT FOR PORTUGAL

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be suiting up for Portugal during this international fixture date. Ronaldo pulled out of Portugal’s camp ahead of their Wednesday game with Gabon because of an eye injury suffered in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Levante on Sunday. Ronaldo caught an elbow to the face in the third minute of a game he scored in and now he will undergo tests to determine the severity of his eye injury.

SHEVCHENKO OFFERED UKRAINE JOB

Andriy Shevchenko may soon be back on Ukraine’s national team, but not as a player. Not even six months after playing his last game for Ukraine, the retired striker has been offered the head coaching job for his national team by the Ukrainian federation. Ukraine is seeking to qualify for the 2014 World Cup and think the 36-year-old Shevchenko can help them achieve that.

VAN PERSIE WITHDRAWS FROM NETHERLANDS ROSTER

Robin van Persie will not be part of the Netherlands squad that will face Germany on Wednesday, as he has withdrawn from the team due to a thigh injury. Van Persie started and played 90 minutes in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Saturday, but he appears to have sustained an injury in that game. Netherlands host Germany in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
