Sacha Kljestan nets his first goal of season for Anderlecht

Just days after tallying an assist on the game-winning goal for Anderlecht against Zenit St. Petersburg in Champions League play,  Sacha Kljestan knocked in his first goal of the year in Belgian League play, as Anderlecht routed Club Brugge 6-1 on Sunday. The win moves Anderlecht to the top of the standings, as they move past Zulte Waregem for first place.

For Kljestan, it is the continuation of a solid 2012, as the Californian now has two goals on the year in all competitions, after opening his scoring in a Champions League qualifier match in August to help Anderlecht qualify for the tournament.

This comes just a day after international teammate Jozy Altidore netted his own goal, with both looking to make their way to Krasnodar, as the Americans will take on Russia in a friendly on Wednesday.

Here’s the goal (at the 4:36 mark):

What do you think of Kljestan’s run of form as of late? What do you think his standing with the U.S. Men’s National Team should be? Share your thoughts below.

  1. The most underrated player in the US pool. Playing for league champions consistently in Belgium, is a full 90 min player and he is overlooked for even MLS players.

    • He’s above average scoring for a midfielder. Good hustle and good tackling. However his first touch and passing is below average. We don’t need more players that make bad passes when pressed, we have enough of them already.,

    • To be fair, he got the call up last cycle, PT in both games, and he’s a fair bet to go to Russia.

I think he and Klinsmann had a similar situation to the one JK has w/ Jozy right now, only Kljestan isn’t as high profile (for the USMNT) as Altidore. Apparently, JK was not impressed with what Kljestan’s work rate in camp, and Kljestan wasn’t happy about riding the pine during the Belgium friendly when the US clearly could have used a spark he was hungry to bring.

Seems like they’re over it now though, and I’m glad to see Sacha in form. I was disappointed in his showing against Italy, but he’s worked his way back in and hopefully won’t disappoint.
