USMNT vs. Canada: Match Night Commentary

The U.S. Men’s National Team kicks off U.S. Soccer’s 100th year, and a very important year for a variety of reasons, with tonight’s friendly against Canada in Houston (9pm, ESPN2).

An MLS-heavy side will take the field at BBVA Compass Stadium tonight, with players looking to impress Jurgen Klinsmann enough to not only gain ground on the USMNT depth chart, but also to potentially earn a place on the World Cup qualifying squad that will travel to Honduras for the Feb. 6th match against the ‘Catrachos’.

The U.S. defense will be in the spotlight tonight, with the centerback pairing of Omar Gonzalez and Matt Besler playing for what could wind up being a starting role in qualifying.

The Americans will face a Canada side that is much younger, and weaker, than the side that forced the full U.S. team into a scoreless draw in Toronto. Dwayne DeRosario leads a young Canadian side that looked awful in a 4-0 loss to Denmark during the weekend.

SBI will be providing live commentary before, during and after the match, so stay with us as we bring you all the action and analysis on tonight’s match.

Enjoy the action (Tonight’s Match Night Commentary is after the jump):

  1. Are we sure we didn’t just go find a dozen strangers and give them USMNT jerseys? I’m not sure this team would qualify for the Gold Cup let alone the World Cup. Thankfully it won’t come to that.

  2. Boy, rough night for young Juan. Bad touch with every part of his body he tries to use. I wouldn’t shake hands with him post-game, somehow he’s going to have a bad touch.

      • But agreed, bad showing for MLS overall. Bruin, Wondo, Davis, Evans, Zusi and the guy from San Jose all had a poor showing. I wouldn’t mind if a couple of them never put on a US shirt again.

      • Its unfair to rate bruin as bad. guy came in at the last 15 min where there was no service and 10 guys parked in canada’s defensive third.

  4. Every single league in the world (and international) should have the ref walk off 10 yards and paint a little line. Good job on that, MLS.

  5. I wish Davis and Zusi would switch places, put Davis more out to the right up top and let Zusi attack from more in the middle of the field

  6. IMO the lineup SHOULD have been:

    —————– Bruin —————–
    — EJ ————————- Gatt —
    —————— Mix ——————
    —————- Benny —————–
    Morrow — Besler — Omar — Morales

      • Actually, in retrospect, why not put Zusi and Mix with Benny at dmid. He’s played there e before and why waste a pure dmid when you don’t need it against a bunker defense….. And yes I know I’ve made an absolute clusterfuck of this. I’m going to shut up now.

      • I wanted to see Gatt and Bedoya wide, with Johnson up top. I also would have started Zusi instead of Mixx, but sub Mixx in at half or 60th depending on how Z looked in playmaker role.

  7. “Canada clearly playing to not get embarrassed, shades of the Olympic Qualifier.” You mean the game the Canucks won 2-0? What a BS, homer comment Ives…Are you a real journalist?
