USWNT off to winning start after rolling in 2013 opener

The Tom Sermanni era is officially in full swing, and we may have also gotten a glimpse of what could one day be the Christen Press era.

Press became just the third play to score two goals in their U.S. Women’s National Team debut (joining Cindy Parlow and Sherrill Kester) to help the U.S. post a 4-1 rout against Scotland in Jacksonville on Saturday.

The win was the first under new U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni, who takes over as full-time head coach after the departure of Pia Sundhage last year.

Shannon Boxx and Sydney Leroux provided the other goals to help the Americans extend their unbeaten streak to 24 matches (a 21-0-3 run).

Press wasn’t the only American to make their debut for the U.S. team. Midfielder Kristen Mewes and defender Julie Johnson also earned their first career caps.

The U.S. and Scotland will play again on Wednesday at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee.
