A designated player slot was opened up by Seattle with the buyout of midfielder Christian Tiffert in preseason after just half a season in the Emerald City. Martins will occupy that third and final DP slot after Mauro Rosales and Shalrie Joseph have already been given that designation.
Obafemi Martins is most notable for his time with Inter Milan in Italy and Newcastle United in England, appearing for each club 88 times and scoring a total of 56 goals over an eight year period.
