On the eve of the latest installment of the D.C. United-New York Red Bulls rivalry The SBI Show talks to a player who was a key figure in the series in the past, a New Jersey native who enjoyed his share of success against his hometown team.
Alecko Eskandarian enjoyed a very successful career before concussions forced him to step away from the game at an early age. The former MLS No. 1 overall draft pick and MLS Cup Final MVP has made the transition to a coaching career, and is now an assistant coach with the New York Cosmos, the same club his father Andranik played for back in the 1970s in the old NASL.
Eskandarian joins us on Episode 24 of The SBI Podcast, and he discusses everything from the 2004 MLS Cup-winning D.C. United team to the D.C.-Red Bulls rivalry, to his struggles with concussions and even his brief foray into the world of reality television.
Co-host Garrett Cleverly and I discuss the recent exit from the CONCACAF Champions League by MLS teams, the performances of Americans Abroad like Clint Dempsey, and we also take a look at the top match-ups in MLS Week Five.
